Deer in the NT.
      #393936 - 20/10/25 09:22 AM

There was a bit of discussion the other day about deer in the NT. Last week a pest shooter showed me a photo of a Sambar stag he shot while cropping pigs on a station not far from here. Was a decent stag too. There was also one dead on the road to Darwin near Adelaide river. There has always been the odd chital around from Tipperary or Mary River but a few Sambar showing themselves of late.

From a hunting standpoint, it would be nice to have access to a huntable population of deer somewhere in Australia's Top End.
As you mention Clay, chital are present in the Stapleton area and have been seen by the Parkies a few times, but never by me.
There are plenty of dingoes in the area so there is zero chance of the population expanding in the Back Country Hunting blocks.
Sambar are present on Coburg of course, and are sometimes taken by safari clients but numbers are not high.
A few small rusa populations are known as well.
When we started the NT Branch of ADA many years ago, talk of pockets of deer scattered around the Northern Territory were discussed optimistically but realistic hunting opportunities have not eventuated.

If there's one, there'll be others.
Had a small herd behind Charters Towers when I was a lad, spread far & wide now.

The reason for NT not spreading over the century, makes sense with the dingoes comments.

I want to know about the "Congo buffalo"? I assume African Forest Buffalo.

I wonder if Cape, Forest buffalo can interbreed with water buffalo?

No chance. While both are in the family Bovidae, they are completely different genera (Syncerus v. Bubalus).

Sometimes a union might produce a sterile offspring in such cases, but even that would be considered highly unlikely considering the taxonomic and morphological gulf between the two.

Back to Deer in the NT...?

Looks like it may be in the doldrums atm, going by the National website.

Glen Norris was the inaugural NT President (I was his nominator at that first meeting at the Clay Target club) and Matt Graham was the Secretary iirc. Glen moved interstate and Matt passed years ago so I stupidly let my ADA membership lapse (before covid). Should probably renew, not so much for any local opportunities but as a passport to interstate activities within the Assn.

ADA has a delegate on the NT Firearms Council so I shall make enquiries and report here accordingly.

Should add: ADA is one of the 3 Approved Hunting Organizations (AHOs) listed for mandatory membership with insurance cover for the purposes of Back Country Hunting accreditation in the NT.

Mate, what are the other two?

I wish interstate residents could participate.

From the NT Firearms Council website under Back Country Hunting:

Juniors or interstate visitors participating by invitation of the permitted hunter do not apply for and get a permit themselves - they are listed as a nominee on the permitted hunter's permit application.

All Permit Applicants, including Nominees, must have completed the BCH accreditation course and be a current member of a BCH (Parks & Wildlife) Approved Hunting Organisation. There are three such AHOs - SSAA, Australian Deer Association and NT Field & Game.
