Life is curious in how it doubles back on itself.
Once upon a time I was very sad that the old doubles used by my grandfather abd grandmother were sold.
Then In my 30th year as a professional hunter one of the finest professional hunters and friends to grace this business left his 100 year old .470 for me. It so happened that I still had one of my grandfathers old cases. It fit perfectly.
A circle has somehow been closed in my life.
Now, I will never let down Ishmael of course. He will always be my number one. But now we have fine permanent company out there indeed.
Like it was said to me when given the gun “you can never sell this double, you will give it to someone worthy when you retire”, so I will one day say that to some bright-eyed, keen conservationist, ethical hunter younger than me.

The guy I hunted with in Zim said he had a client booked but something came up and he had to get someone else to take the hunt. The PH who stood in was given a Holland Royal as a tip. I could never get over that.

Bill Love of "Love and Lee" BC Guides was given a pre-64 Model 70 .375H&H magnum by Fred Bear. The finalie of the hunt had an arrowed grizzly charge Bill Love and Fred Bear. Bill shot the Bear several times, finally anchoring it just feet in front of him. Bill used a Model 70 in .30/06 in those days as his bach-up rifle & likely loaded with 220gr. RN bullets, factory ammo.
Fred presented Bill with the rifle before leaving camp for Smithers to fly home. Fred said the reason was: "I want you to still be alive to guide me on my next hunt."
This was related to me by one of Bill's assistant guides at the time. I'm going to say it was late fall, 1978.
