looks like a 4 ga rifle cartridge but isn't and you wonder how it would perform on elephant in a rifle

here with family and friends

4 ga plastik shell, 1" Nordenfelt, 26,5 mm signal flare and 14,5x114 russian

the Nordenfelt have a 30,28 mm rim, 2,21 mm thick, base 27,20mm, mouth 26,16 mm and 96,66 mm long so no real 4 ".
maximum for the 4 ga is 30,45 mm rim, 3,25 mm thick, base 27,60, mouth 26,20 mm so yes the round will maybe fit into the chamber of a 4 ga. don't hope to find brass for loading ammo for a 4 ga, they are rare like hen's ivory

DWM Karlruhe made

steel bullet weight 205 gramm not grains, having a strange hollow base

another one in the net, loaded

Interesting bullet/ctg. 3,164gr. weight at 205 grams. Appears to have a guilding metal jacket but a steel core or at least a steel nose.

its a lathe turned steel core with a brass jacket that was used mostly against smaller boats in the navy. imho, there must be a thin layer of lead between the jacket and the steel core because brass on steel will be to hard for the rifling.
the cartridge was also used for "barrel inserts" in big cannons for target pratice.

Thank you. Interesting usage.
I agree about the lead, however perhaps the brass was thick enough to engrave without too much pressure against the steel.

I suspect that the 1" Nordenfelt would have a more than mild kick

Judging by the Rolls Royce Potentate thread, some Indian Rajahs used light cannon against elephant.

if so the 1" Nordenfelt would have been a good choice

I have read a story from 18. century indonesia when the local king made some kind of "bullfight" with water bufalos, elephant and even one rhino and they use a small muzzle loader canon.
