9.3x74R Double Rifle Regulation - Merkel
      #393717 - 09/10/25 10:27 PM

Hi folks,

I'm on the lookout for a double in the above calibre and think I may have found one, a 2000 era Merkel. The owner is not sure what it was regulated for so I'm assuming a standard 286gr load. The complication is here in the UK I'll have to resort to using lighter 230-250gr all copper bullets to feed it.

I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and what they got in terms of accuracy and velocity for the lighter bullets, in order for it to regulate?

On another note are there any thoughts good or bad about a 25 year old Merkel boxlock, shooting all copper bullets in it...or how that might compare to a new Krieghoff which I haven't ruled out as an option. As a bonus the Krieghoff has adjustable muzzles to help with regulation.

Many thanks in advance!

Can you shoot your rifle at a rifle range with conventional ammo, but in the field monos only?
As long as the monos are of the Woodleigh Hydro design you won't have pressure issues, use conventional loads from starting loads & work up, again its a try & see what works for regulation in your particular rifle.
It took 4 powders to regulate my merkel with woodleighs!

Yes they are available

If shooting monos I'd only shoot RAISED banded bullets.

The Woodleigh Hydros are examples.

Sadly Kynamco in Mildenhall is no more, they ceased trading finally in May 2025 and the company is in liquidation, all a rather sad end to a great enterprise run by David and Susan Little for over 30 years. And will leave a big gap in the world of big game ammunition manufacture.

Thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated! As far as I understand it the new legislation prohibits the use of any lead core ammunition regardless of where it's used. On top of that for hunting here in the UK the bullet used must be designed to expand and deform, even with the cup point the Woodleigh hydro's wouldn't be allowed for hunting.

I have found a few options however, RWS make the HIT bullet which is basically a Barnes dressed up. Fox sells a couple of 9.3 bullets, as well as Sako in component form.

I'm more concerned about what might be required to get the rifle to shoot using these lighter bullets, and actually having enough velocity behind them once that's done to perform reliably.

It is a big shame about Kynamco, let's hope someone takes up the name and gives it a new lease of life.

Matabele,
might be worth a shot talking to these guys at outer edge.

If the same stunt is pulled here we'll be in the same boat!

Those prices for the bullets for 50 or 100?
For 100, would roughly be the same as here for TSX.

Be aware some European 9.3x74Rs are regulated with light 232 gr bullets.
