Multi calibre double rifles
      #39356 - 20/10/05 04:04 PM

Multi-calibre double rifles, ie a double with two different rifle chamberings.

How common are they?

Have you come across or used any and if which cartridges and configurations?

Are they 'sensible' or oddities?

I have a Searcy Deluxe grade with .470NE, .375 Flanged Magnum (scoped) , and 12ga barrels. It is a neat kit that I bought from Butch at the last SCI show. The .470 has accounted for a couple of buffalo and the 12ga a bunch of pheasant and clays

I'm referring one barrel sets with more than one cartridge, more than multi-barrel sets.

I've seen German stack guns with seven millimeter high power in one tube and hornet in the other, other stalking rifle chamberings too, typically with the other tube being hornet.

I think such a nice light rifle would be useful in the woods.

They were somewhat common in the older German and Austrian guns, but seem to have died out, for the most part. I run across an occasional u/o in something like 7X65R or 8X57JRS over 22 hornet, 222, or 22 Savage HP. Common now is to use a small caliber insert in a drilling to make a Bock-Drilling, in essence. I have my Sauer 12/12/30-06 set up as 22 WM/12/30-06. Its a plains game, Francolin/Guinea fowl killing SOB!

they are common under the krauts and I think more and more are build now. Most time over/under so called "Bergstutzen" with a high power 7mm,.30 or 8mm and a .22 like hornet or similar. this is in fact a special gun for the Alps.
read an articel in a gunmagazin here about a side by side with .470 NE and a 8x75RS barrel. the big barrel for big five and the powerful 8mm for plainsgame. if i remeber this rigth the owner of this gun bring it to africa every year.

John, I've owned several, all stack barrel rifles. I believe they are more correctly called combination rifles, rather than double rifles. though they have two barrels, both rifled. All the ones I've owned have been German, and are fine walk about hunting rifles for general bag, and make a fine back up for a serious main double if one of the barrels is uig enough to handle the big boys. I had one that was 9.3X74R on the bottom, and a .22 hornet on top. I used that little rifle for years in the New Mexico mountains, hunting Elk, Muledeer, and Coyotes! HANDY!!!!!!!!!!!

Two rifle calibres, one small, one large, Is this called a bergstutzen. I probably spelled it wrong. I like the idea too, I think a .222 Rem matched with a 9,3 could be very handy. I could also see a .222 rem and a .308 too for hunting in our area. As for combination guns a 20ga. 76mm witha .308 would be great.

Savage Arms Co. made combination guns of this type years ago, I don't know if they are still makeing them or not. They were mostly 20 ga. shotgun on the bottom barrel and a smaller rifle caliber (22 LR, 22 Hornet, 222, and on up to 30-30) on the top barrel. Some were also made with 12 ga barrels. I sold a few and took some in on trade when I had my gunshop years ago. They were inexpensive little guns that were semi popular with the person wanting one gun, a shot gun and rifle) all in one.

I never was grazy about them and still am not. I personally see no reason to have a rifle/shotgun combined into one gun as you are limiting yourself. If you miss a bird in flight on the first shot with the shotgun barrel, how do you expect to hit it on the second shot with a rifled barrel? The same would hold true if you are deer hunting and miss with the rifled barrel, I don't see the shotgun barrel loaded with bird shot of much use.

I also can not see the need for a double caliber rifle. You have to take two different calibers of ammo with you, seems to me this could be confusing at times.

I defenately would not take a rifle like this to hunt DG, or even plains game as DG could be lurking in the area. Miss with the 9.3x74R and use the 22 Hornet for a stopper?

Just my opinion, these guns would not be something I would want or see a need for!

Mauser,

Much depends on one's type of hunting. I have climbed to the top of 9,000-10,000 foot mountains hunting mule deer on days when they just were not moving at all, only to find a blue grouse honey hole or several covies of chucker on the way up and down. My drilling often saved the day and gave me a great bird shoot when there was no opportunity for deer.

I've been hunting with a drilling now for 46 years and wouldn't be without one...or six...or a dozen... I also like my cape guns and BBFs for the same reason. I can reload the rifle fast enough for deer or plains game hunting, and one or two shots at birds beats none at all.

Mauser, I think you are missing the point of the cobbination gun, be it rifle/shotgun, ot two different chamberings in rifle barrels. Where I used to live, and hunt, the blue quail, muledeer, black bear, and wild turkey was all open at the same time. I found a little Berella cape gun (s/s side lock hammer ) chambered for 8X57JR,on the right barrel, and a 16 ga shotgun on the left. Before I got this little rifle, when I left my jeep, I either took my rifle, or my shotgun, depending on what I was most likely to see in that area. Inveribly, if I had the rifle, I'd jump quail, or trukeys, if I was stalking a covey of quail, or a flock of turkeys, I'd jump a big muley. Since I did a lot of back-pack hunting in those days, this rifle was absolutely the nuts. What these guns are is two single shots on the same stock. They are used like a single shot.

The cheap little Savage combos are a good platform for a pick-up gun for a rancher. I had one factory chambered for 20ga/22 lr I cut the shot barrel off just ahead of the henge pin, and sleeved in a 30-30 barrel, and carried in my jeep for years. worked like a charm, on our ranch where one minute you were seeing a jack rabbit, and the next a deer.

I have several cape guns, and combination guns, and I find a use for them all. They are great backpacking guns.
