Boswell 2 1/2 inch game gun
      #393440 - 16/09/25 08:53 AM

Have been looking for a nice light 2 1/2 inch game gun and picked up this Boswell off Used Guns. Ticked most of the boxes for me. 6 lb 13, nice engraving, 30 inch barrels, ejectors. Was a bit puzzled by the diamond point checkering but have seen quite a few old Boswells with it when looking into it. The serial number puts this one around 1904.

Great example of the genre. Ejector too: nice!

"War and Peace" on the barrel flats!

Boswell must have had an energetic engraver on staff as most Boswells I have seen are well embellished.

Do you have a source of 2 1/2 inch cartridges, or do you intend to roll your own?
My Rigby sidelock is 2 1/2 inch chambered and I use a vintage bench-clamped tool from the golden era to roll-crimp onto a nitro card covering an ounce of bismuth shot.
The ~140 year old tool works better than my modern roll-crimper in the drill press!
Heaps better!!

Ha Ha yeah there is a bit going on on the flats. Have a few boxes of these rounds below which are nice to shoot but will have to look at loading at some stage.

Did I see that right, Clayton, #8 shot?

I found that when shooting ducks over my decoys that trap loads using 1 1/8 oz. of 7 1/upshot worked very well. The heads and necks riddled with shot and none made it through the breast feathers, :ie, no shot in the bodies.
I used heavy loads of 1 1/4oz of 8 1/2 reclaimed shot for"ground sloosing" crips on the water. Again, no pellets in their bodies.

Daryl
Yeah number 8. I only shoot small birds with this load and it works really well even on some fairly long shots. I only bought the Boswell for the same small birds. Have not tried those shells on anything larger and likely won't.

The small shot I was using on the du ks was lead - "some" years ago & before the lead shot ban.
I would suggest the #9 tungsten nontoxic shot would be good for larger birds than ducks.
Fellows in the States are using that size tungsten on turkeys with PERFECT effect from their 20 and larger bore flint locks.
