.358 Win. - bullet selection
      #393355 - 10/09/25 07:39 AM

Gentlemen,

I have the task to select and test a hunting load for a Brünner ZG47 in .358 Winchester with a barrel length of 50cm / ca. 20 inches.

Cases are original from Winchester.
Standard LR primer
Powder: Kemira N140

The rifle is intended for roe deer and small boars (max 50kg) upto 150 meters.
Mounted optic is a Zeiss 2,5-10 power scope with 52mm objective lens diameter.

I tested 180grs Speer SP FN and 200grs Sierra SPRN, velocities for the 180grs Speer were max 790 m/s with good precision.
However, this bullet seems to be a little bit soft (Steve Z´s experience) and also a little bit light for the small boars.

What do you think about the Sierra 225grs SPBT Gameking for this application?
Also the Nosler 225grs Accubond comes to mind, but this is rarely offered for purchase here.

Any of your suggestions or experiences are appreciated, thank you!

best regards
Rolf

Rplf,
If you can get Woodleighs then you can't go wrong as they have specific velocity ratings.

I have a Ruger M-77 in .358 Win. I have taken 2 or 3 hogs with the 225 Game Kings. I also used the GK's in a .35 Whelen for a different hog. They are accurate for me and work.

In my 356W RPM XL Hunter with 12" barrel, I have used a 200 gr HC GC bullet. It leaves a 3/8" drainage hole.

I would think the 225gr. SIERRA's, either one, would be excellent of either animal.
For heavier game, my brother's. 356 Win. did well on a couple moose with the 250gr. Hornady R.N. at 2,160fps.

Love the 'drainage hole' term, classic!

I would expect the 220gr. SPEER Hot Core should also work well.

The 180 Speer should be a fine bullet at the speed you mentioned. I have used the Sierra 225 on whitetail deer and have no complaints with it.

Gentlemen,

thank you very much for your recommendations!

As the Sierras are in the "easy" price range, I will test these first, try them on roe deer and fox
and decide afterwards whether I shoud improve with the Woodleighs or Accubonds.
(I think that for boar hunting I have to step up...)

Thank you all!

kind reagrds
Rolf

The Speer 220 grain flat nose work well on pigs in my Win M94 356. The Hornady 200 grain spire points work well on pigs, camels and deer out of my 35Sambar (358WSM). I do not know if they make these anymore.

In my Whelen I run 250 grain Speer Hot Cores for pigs and deer. If after Sambar or Camels I will use Woodleigh 250 grain Round Nose or Protected Points.

I think those are excellent bullets and suggestions, Rule303.
Spot-on.
The 250gr. Speer Spitzer (hot core)was also a great bullet from my .358 Norma. I didn't shoot anything with it but coyotes - not much damage, so the bullets weren't over-expanding. They were exceptionally accurate at 2,800fps.
The now discontinued 280gr. Hornady RN was a good moose bullet.

Those 280 grain round noses would be sorely missed. Unfortunately Woodleigh only make their 275 grain 358 bullets in their Protected Point, no round nose, still be good on big tough game.
