Purdey Island lock hammer gun in .400 Purdey
      #393277 - 03/09/25 08:53 AM

Originally built in 1891 according to the Dallas book, likely as a .450 3&1/4"(charge on buttplate reads 4 drams Curtis & Harvey's #6), re-barreled during the Nitro era by the makers using Whitworth steel barrels to the .400 Purdey cartridge. The engraving on this rifle is outstanding, Purdey quality through out out. Still carries the Purdey barrel blue. The rifling remains strong with a some haze in the grooves forward of the chambers, not real pitting to speak of. Tight and on the face, everything works as it should, the Jones under lever "snaps" into place with a spring assist

Steve,

That is a very nice rifle. Thanks for showing.

It is interesting that this very nice rifle had been a 450 BPE and was rebarrelled to 400 Purdey. I believe then 450 BPE has about the same power as (or is slightly more powerful than) the 400 Purdey. At least the owner stayed with a traditional double rifle cartridge and used Pirdey to make the change.

Very nice rifle and should be fun to shoot and hunt with.

Google says 230gr. @ 2,050fps. for the .400 Purdey.

Absolute stunner mate - the engraving alone is something else!
Shame the old barrels weren't kept, 2 for the price of one.

Nothing like an island lock. Perfect engraving.
