pretty sure he was a local gunmaker in Harburg and this gun was made in Suhl or Zella-Mehlis.
Harburg is since 1937 a part of Hamburg when Great Hamburg was created, prior to that a city by its own.
A/E could mean "an der Elbe" - on the Elbe river.

you know the drill make pics of all parts and maybe its possible to say who made it.

The country gunshop of Carl Bargholz, Schwarzenbergstr. 31, Harburg, was mentioned in 1925. The shop existed until after WW2, run by Hans Bargholz (son?) in 1954. Harburg is now a part of greater Hamburg, but without any gunshop or a Bargholz.

here is link to the auction site where i bought it; the bore is described as poor but it had not been cleaned, it is actually very good. Probably worked to my benefit

" GERMAN BAVARIA | Model: 98 Mauser Commercial | Caliber: 8 X 57S/.318 BORE"

what it have to do with bavaria is unknown to me and to the auction house also.
Suhl/Zella-Mehlis build, maybe the proofmarks will telling more about it. very, very likely a .318 barrel, better be prepaired for this.

Very nice rifle 12tar!
A good barrel clean fixes most problems! Getting .318" projectiles may be an issue, you might have to resize projectiles mate!

Even if you can't find .318, I find it easy to size .323 down.

if anyone is interested in gun prices in Canada look at the Switzer's auction reference above, click on the upper right- back to catalogue listing
these are the sale prices, you have to add about 30%: commission (15%), sales tax (12%) and insured shipping
Canadian dollar, about 70 cents US
there is a spread in prices from a wide variety of old and modern firearms

Got an email from Peter aka “Aelgmule”, Sweden, Quote:

“You may not be interested but perhaps the owner of the Bargholz rifle over at the NE-forum is. My e-mail is not accepted on that forum. Apparently, I am not a real person and consequently I cannot register.
Here is what I have on C/Karl Bargholz, Harburg.
C/Karl Bargholz, gunsmith, started his business in either 1877 or 1878. If I had to put money on what year he began I would go for 1877, but I might lose my money. Address for the shop was Bergstraße 11, Harburg. C/Karl Bargholz is listed as both mechanic and gunsmith. He stayed at Bergstraße 11 up until sometime between 1928 and 1932. Sometime in that period the address changed to Bergstraße 31, Harburg.
In 1932 both C/Karl and Hans Bargholz are listed as master gunsmiths. Address Bergstraße 31, Harburg. Both C/Karl and Hans had Bergstraße 31 as their abode, so I assume Hans was C/Karl’s son. Their business is listed as gun and ammunition store. Phone: 37 21 12.
When C/Karl Bargholz left the business (passed?) is not known to me. By 1938 Hans Bargholz is sole owner and it seems he changed the name of the business to Hans Bargholz, Waffen- und Munitionshandlungen, Bergstraße 31. Phone: 37 38 35. When the address changed to Schwarzenbergstraße 31 I do not know. However, I note that the number is still 31, so perhaps the street name was changed from Bergstraße to Schwarzenbergstraße, but, I would like to stress that is speculation on my part. For how long Hans Bargholz ran the shop at Schwarzenbergstraße 31 is not known to me. By 1955 there is a gunsmith Richard Roder at Schwarzenbergstraße 31, Hamburg/Harberg but the business Hans Bargholz, gun shop, is still listed at the address. I again speculate but perhaps 1955 was the year when the business changed owner. By 1962 Richard Roder is no longer in Hamburg/Harburg.
The above is all I have (for now!) on the Bargholz business in Harburg.
Kind regards
Peter“

"In 1937, the city, along with several towns in the surrounding Harburg district, was transferred from the state of Prussia to Hamburg under the Greater Hamburg Act. The city lost its independence one year later, on April 1, 1938."

when Greater Hamburg was created the new big city had probably many common street names like "Bergstr" mountain street - more than once and in some cases maybe 3 or 4 times.
so, its common practise in such city expansions to change such a double name a little bit from Bergstr.31 to Schwarzenbergstr.31. I have seen such changings more than once.

No idea who "Peter aka "Aelgmule", Sweden" is.

No idea when "Peter" tried to join. Don't know him. Or when "Peter" tried to join? Recently? Years ago? MikeH used to be a lot tougher rejecting applications than me.

"My e-mail is not accepted on that forum"?

So he claims his "email was rejected"? No idea what email that is. We don't "reject emails" either. For a period of time, google rejected nitroexpress.com email addresses, so Gmail didn't work on NE. Not the other way round.

"Apparently, I am not a real person and consequently I cannot register."
Huh? Sounds like the email address was not rejected .... But the application was.

Hint, when the application says the "Bio" is mandatory, a minimum expectation is a brief description of what the interest is and relevance.

I did reject a recent application because the bio was something like "I like guns" but the email was "easyemails", spammer sounding. I declined with a brief email "Apply again with a better BIO".

The system also times out applications after three days if they don't confirm their email address, e.g. if it was fuctious, or doesn't work.

Not our problem. Use proper email services

A reason we, cross fingers, are keeping spammers out.

The tone of that paragraph isn't endearing either .... But "Peter" can try again if he wishes.

Kuduae

Please thank Peter from me for his research; if he finds more on Bargholz perhaps he can post directly
or through you.

Personally I am a luddite with modern technology, and you and lancaster have kindly helped me in the past to post on the NE forum.
