question for rifle
      #39316 - 20/10/05 04:39 AM

Hi there fellows.
I write from Greece.
I'm no hunter but I recently got a great gift from my new father in law.
He gave me a fantastic rifle from Holland & Holland and I'm trying to find out the gun;s past glory.
My father in law got it from his father when they lived in Medani-Sudan during the past century.
He hunt with it for deers and bigger animals.
The data that exists on the gun and the great looking leather box is
"Holland & Holland Magnum Mauser 240 Rifle" there is a date "14/9/1924" on the box.
In the box many papers of historical value, like an envelop with the range report from Holland and Holland, and many more.
I'm trying to find out what kind of gun is it and how proud should I be of it.
Of course I'm already proud since he gave me a present his father gave him many years ago!
Anyway in historical value is it considered to be something unique for hunters?
Any info or link that I could search would be of great help to me as I want to create an archive on the gun and present it to my father in law.

Thank you for all your answers,
Chris

I think you found a real keeper.
Try looking through Hollands site.

Chirs,

Well done.
"How proud should I be of it ?" - Very

Sounds like you have a 240 Apex Bolt Action made on a (probably) Mauser 98
action.

14/9/1924 may be finish date or delivery date.

If ou post the Serial Number, I wshould be able to give you a date of Manufacture.

f you contact Hollands with the details of the gun including serial number,
they may provide you with a copy of the records.

240 Apex was a proprietary round by Holland - ie only really made by Holland.

Although you may be able to buy ammo, it really is a reloading proposition
which isn't a problem if you can get dies etc as cases can be made.

The bore - I would strongly suggest you get the bore slugged by a gunsmith
especially if you plan to shoot it.

240's had a bit of variiation in bore size so you need to know what it is.
Could be from .243 - .246.

If .243, great, you can use .243 bullets, if .244 and above, we have worked out
how to make bullets for it.

Hope this helps. By all means post questions again if I have not been clear
and you want further explanation.

Chris,

You have a great rifle and a wonderful father in law. If you don't hunt, the rifle should make you want to - Holland and Holland made some of the finest rifles in the world and still do. If you want specific information on your gun the British gun trade has it's own forums and you could register there and get the information that you want on your gun;s history from them. Just go to this site.

If you have time, please post pictures of your rifle here.

Thanks in advance, best wishes and congratulations again!
