"Pop-Up Peep" Sight Query
      #392829 - 06/08/25 11:52 PM

I have a couple of rifles with an aperture sight inletted into the stock which fold up. One is on a Mauser the other on a Steyr. (I chose this forum because I have pictures of the Steyr handy.)

My question is, how are these sights intended to be used? Are they a "tang sight" like the Lymans for use solely with the front sight or is the aperture a "focusing device" (similar to a pin hole camera) to be used with both front and rear?

Apparently I don't know which option to select from Imgur.....sorry.

This variation from about 1850-1860 (& rebuilt in a bench copy by my bro) is used on conjunction with the barrel sights, both, I assume, or is used for longer range with just the front sight. TPI is 80.

Rather nice rifle there Hoot, fantastic work done on the inletting for that peep!
I can only say having a BRNO ZKK with its own pop up peep that it could be used in whatever combination sighting/load that you the owner requires.
If you want to use it with both front & rear sight because your eyes aren't the best due to aging then do so if it works for you mate!
Normally front & peep, the rear should fold.
What is your rifle, never seen a peep like that before, if you have a few more photos of your rifle can you show us please?

I used the pop-up peep on my ZKK .375H&H for when I started 3-position match shooting with 275gr. G/C bullets and 23gr. SR7625 with Kapok filler. I made Sharpshooter or was it Marksman with that combo? second one up, anyway. LOL
It was used with the rear barrel sight removed.

Use the BBCode option so your images appear directly in your post.

Well, [bad word]. The rifle is a Steyr M-95 straight pull. Long story but it is now been rebarreled to 8x56R by a good friend who is a great 'smith. We are discussing the diameter of the aperture, currently .030", and how it is terribly tiny. My instinct is to open it up but I wanted to get a handle on how it was to be used in the first place before changing anything.

Ah yes I see the problem, images need to be saved as a jpg not jpeg. See the post "Try" where Mick is having same problem with jpeg files.

My photo app insists its a 'jpeg/jpg' and I see no option to change things. I'll keep poking at it.

Anyway, it's the rifle posted here but has been rebarreled => http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=388384&an=0&page=0#Post388384

Jpeg is an apple thing. This forum needs a 3 digit file eg jpg not jpeg. Browsers can cope but not this software.

There would be simple software, photo editing software that can open a JPEG and save it as a jpg.

It may be able to be simply renamed? I'll give it a try.

In the meantime, posting the links to the web address of images, people can click on them to see the images.

On the topic, I've never used or owned a pop up peep sight. But if accurate, look more than useful.

I wanted to acquire a CZ action with an integral pop up peep sight.

Years ago, I looked at a 6.5x54 MS and a 9.5x57 MS rifle at a local gun show. The 9.5 had a flip up peep sight I think. I was interested in both rifles but had just purchased anotherveifferent rifle and be or two MS's were outside my budget at the time.

Funny I told the seller I'd never heard of the 9.5x57, I'd heard about the 9.3x57. I didn't know it existed. He gave me a non amused flat look. Now I find my comment back then incredibly ignorant. The .375 Nitro Express or 9.5x57 is such an old cartridge. Over 115 years old. Its amazing how ones knowledge can change over time, especially through NitroExpress.com .

We might forget sometimes what the common shooters knowledge is on non "modern" commercial cartridges and rifles. The commercial market is always pushing the newest sh*t wannabe copied cartridge as if it's something new. The latest flat short cartridge, the latest crude more "must have" rifle.

Indeed I remember the 57mm casecas being promoted as "dead". The .243 Win having ascesdancy over the 6mm Rem. But if anything, the 7x57 is now more popular on the internet at least, than the ran out of puff 7mm/08. Thanks heavily to Rigby marketing,

These old vintage rifles with their useful flip up peeps are historical and in our modern times still very useful.

I just copied the urls from your post, hoot, and tossed them into the address-bar of a new window and they popped open no worries.
...and the address-bar dropped the jpeg file extension altogether!

If you put ...//imgur.com/XqSxwDB.jpg instead of ....jpeg in the web-address between the [img]s, it will display here in the thread, but bloody HUGE!!

Like this:

Easier as John says, to just post the link to be clicked on to open in a new window.

I don't own a rifle with a pop-up peep. Sadly, none of my Mannlichers came from the factory with one. However, almost all of my vintage hunting rifles wear either an aperture receiver sight or a bolt shroud aperture.
I love aperture sights! All but one of my white deer have been taken with open sights. So far, my aging eyes have allowed me to continue to hunt this way. I will continue to use iron sights until my eyes force me to switch over to a scope.

Cheap or free sw allows you to shrink an image. Some websites allow this for free as well.

Peep sights are meant to be used as the rear sight. So, peep and front sight, dose, not mean you have to but regulating 3 sights is not going to be easy.

Looking through the peep you will notice a bright dot of light in the center of the peep; the top of the front sight should be in the middle of the bright dot. Doing this makes focusing on the front sight easier than trying to align standard rear sight and front sight, so the theory goes. This worked well for me when my eyes were a little younger. The bigger peeps were made for close, fast shooting, the smaller peep is for accurate distance shooting.
