strange bump on the side of a barrel?
      #392710 - 30/07/25 02:02 PM

The photo below shows the muzzle end of the barrels for a double flintlock 12 ga. Can anyone tell me what that little protuberance on the side of the barrel would be for? Looks to me as if the barrels were filed down to finished size and they left that for some reason.

Years ago, in one of the books I perused, was a picture of some blokes beside a cabin. One had a muzzleloading SxS with a bayonet mounted to the side of one of the barrels.
That lump is a puzzle, casper50.

Daryl, I have seen that in pictures of early Continental sporting rifles and guns that could also serve as military firearms. I think those were singleshot firearms but there could have bee SxSs also,

In the absence of any other information I would hazard a guess that a pinhole has occurred in one of the barrels in the space between the top and bottom ribs and escaping gas has blown out an escape split through the bottom rib, hence the piece of rib standing proud and the pattern of rust? blown out onto the barrel and rib surfaces. I think that blown rust? pattern is a give away as to what has occurred.
Can you see any sign of a pin hole/s inside the barrels, maybe hard to see if barrels are worn and dirty?

Ah sorry was looking at the protuberance on the bottom rib, not the one on the side of the barrel.

Eagle, That was my thoughts as to the "blowout" star on the rib.

What appears as a small protrusion on the barrel looks to samll to be a bayonet lug or anything else. Is it a plug that hasn't been filed away??

To me, it seems that the star on the rib is a potential concern; ie, that one of the barrels has a pinhole and that the star is the visible sign of the pinhole.

OK, I thought the "star" being so symmetrically placed, was gold inlay radiating from the front sight base.
I am looking at this on my phone, from the lake.
Someone has to be here, might as well be me.

Ok then, in the absence of more sensible assessments, the protuberance on the side of the barrel must be a sight for shooting "gangsta style"...

The one on the bottom is for "full gangsta" upside down!

The gold "sunburst or star" and that little nip on the rib is the top rib. Since there's no front bead or provision for one maybe it's used for the front bead. These aren't my forte so lots of strange stuff to me.

Any marks as in makers name on the locks or top rib, Casper?
