Good day out on the Marrakai Plain
      #392417 - 13/07/25 12:09 AM

Spent the morning chasing pigs and buffalo on the Marrakai Plain today with some degree of success.
Some ripper boars fell to our guns but the buffalo were elusive.
The big swamps along the river are still quite full due to the wet season's strong finish earlier this year,
and the herds of buffalo were conspicuous by their loud splashing stampedes out into the swamps whenever the wind changed.
...which was all too frequently!
We only scored a dozen pigs or so between the three of us, but most were good sized hogs with a sprinkling of big tuskers.
Here's my three best:

This one was shot through the shoulders perfectly at about 20 metres, but after flopping around in his wallow for a few seconds he managed to get to his feet and ran straight at us! Stopped him with a frontal head-shot within 5 paces!
Bit more exciting than it needed to be!

This fellow was shared with my buddy as it turned out (2 bullet holes).
Bit of a melee at the time, with all 3 of us in a bomb-up. A couple of lucky hogs got clean away.

This 100 kilo monster was spotted walking in to water, He dropped to a well-placed shot
...but from the other side of the muddy channel visible in the background!
A long walk round was required to avoid muddy/wet boots. ...and crocs!

The buffalo will have to wait till next time!

Daryl:
I carried my scoped Ruger .338-06 today, with Woodleigh Hydros for a chiller-filler buffalo and 225gr Protected Points for boars.
The other two rifles present were a (very!) short Marlin lever-gun in .45-70 and a Jeffery .404, both using premium bullets.

Cool, thanks.
Any idea on the .45/70's load?
The guide gun has an 18 1/2" barrel think.

Thanks for posting Tony, looks like a great hunt. A dozen pigs with a charging boar sounds like a good day to me, well done.

Matt.

Daryl:
My friend with the new Marlin (Ruger?) .45-70 was using Barnes premium ammo, presumably thrown in with the deal, and Federal factory loads for backup.
Should have paid more attention: the Barnes had pointy red polymer tips iirc.
He had already knocked over a couple of young buff for the chiller on a previous hunt, using that ammo.
Hopefully he will start keeping the empties so we can load him up some 350gr Woodleigh Weldcores for buff and big boars.

I have developed a load for the Baikal double-rifle that emulates .450 nitro-for-black all day long!

Great day out indeed mate!
Some big boars alright, don't listen to John & wade thru those waterholes, you might not get back, certainly croc country

Nice memento of a day in the hunting field with good mates, beautiful weather,
and a modicum of success!

Thanks Tony. The only pointy red tip .458" bullets I know of, are the 325gr. Hornady bullet and is loaded to about 1,900 in the short bl. and 2,000fps I think, in the 22 or 24".
The tip is rubber and is compressible, allowing it's SAFE use in tubular magazines.
The 350gr. Hornady RN AND FN is a dandy, quite tough bullet & excellent. I would not hesitate to use it on most game animals. Wonderful penetrating through bone on moose.

Daryl:
Starting to think ol'mate might have had some unboxed Hornadys with the red tips, and that's what I saw him loading.
The Barnes were Vor-TX in the light-colored box (now dark grey?) that I noticed when we loaded up at the vehicles
before setting off for the morning.
Like this. ...but no red tip!

Like I said: should have paid more attention.

Guess I better ask him!
