Not hunting but safari related, elephant kills two tourists

British tourist killed by elephant in Zambia

British media are all reporting about a tragic incident in which Easton Janet Taylor, 68, and Alison Jean Taylor, 67, both lost their lives when they were attacked by an elephant on an on-foot safari in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

The safari guide shot and wounded the charging elephant cow, but couldn't stop the attack and prevent the loss of life.

Accidental deaths are always tragic, and I am sure that both victims were kind and nature-loving people. May they rest in peace - my deepest condolences go out to their families.

What I struggle to understand is the extreme media bias evident in the extensive coverage of this incident.

An example:

Sky NEWS reports "Elephant kills British woman and New Zealander on walking safari in Zambia.
The incident follows two other fatal elephant attacks on women doing safaris in Zambia last year."

In reality, the incident follows THOUSANDS of fatal wildlife attacks on people in Africa and India over the last decade. Yet these particular incidents are interesting to the press, solely because the victims are Western tourists... people who took a calculated risk by approaching the dangerous animals in the company of an armed guide.

The local people living in these areas are not approaching the animals; they do not have an armed guide at their side, and they certainly do not pay for the experience of being face-to-face with large wildlife. They are simply forced into the situation they are in, and when they are attacked and killed in their fields, they are just anonymous brown victims of human wildlife conflict, unworthy of being mentioned in the Western press.

It's wrong

People might say the two sisters were stupid and got killed for being there. Their own fault.

Partly true. A walking safari viewing elephants can be dangerous. Walking safaris are popular for game viewing. I've never done one. But have thought about it. As a hunter I've done it of course while hunting as we all have.

An advantage is carrying ones own rifle. Really important if the guides or PHAs run away. I've heard of that again just recently.

And the "guides", the PHs being probably far more competent.

I wonder about the "injured" or wounded elephant cow in the attack. How competent was the guide in shooting elephants. An "injured"/wounded elephant escaped. Of course anyone can make a mistake or the circumstances create it. However I would have thought the armed guide would be right beside the two sisters.

Guides have lesser qualification skills compared to a DG PH.

I've had a Zambezi River guide, an out of work PH, who I definitely would not want as a DG PH.

Game viewing tourist safaris aren't stupid. They represent an income stream for parks and a legitimate activity for wildlife interest tourism. Dangerous game is called dangerous for a reason. Sometimes no matter what precautions are taken, unfortunate results can happen.

Jens article deals with the woke media racism. Hypocritical stressing about a couple of tourist sisters killed by an elephant cow. A cow wounded in the incident. A cow with a calf. Probably both will die.

Its seeming OK to kill an elephant to protect game viewing tourists. But very wrong to kill an elephant on sporting hunting safaris, or elephant herd culls. On a sporting hunting elephant safari, a cow with a calf would never be shot.

As Jens mentions, native Africans living with elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocs, lions, leopards etc are regularly killed. No outcry from the hypocritical woke racist western mass media. A thousand deaths don't get a single mention. Two silly western white sisters do. Get front page stories. Brown and black lives are unimportant to the liberal leftist racist woke mass media unless they can be used for some anti west activist propaganda.

African populations are unfortunately expanding. And ever encroach the wildlife areas. A problem needing solutions.

Culling excess wildlife to the limits of available land, whether by sporting highly paid safaris, or by other culling is derided by the fake news western mass media. Yet very much part of the needs to protect and prevent some deaths among local populations. Ensure or helpmeeduce shamba food crop destruction, deaths of people just going about their normal daily lives.
