I BOUGHT AN 8 BORE DOUBLE RIFLE ONCE OWNED BY JACK LOTT

This is the Biggest cal double rifle I now own. And I love the Jack Lott history - as written and pictured in both the 1983 and 1995 editions of "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott. I always wanted an 8-bore double rifle, and when this one came up for sale I unloaded a bunch of iron to buy it. All the specs are shown above the pictures. I am anxious to get to the range to test it, but need help with loading recommendations. Since it has steel barrels, I intend to load "nitro-for-black" cartridges. Again, your help would be appreciated.

(I also have 2 other rifles attributed to Jack Lott. Picture links are below. The first is a Custom 458 Mauser. The second is a Custom 458 Browning. Both these are also written and pictured in both the 1983 and 1995 editions of "Big Bore Rifles" by Jack Lott.)

Boy oh boy you did it this time mate!
You certainly snagged a goodun'!
Will be an amazing piece of kit regardless knowing it provenance, whether it goes back to Africa or just a wandering elephant in you back yard it will be a blast literally!
With BP it will certainly give a thump on either end - 1250gn conical & 10 dram of powder, you're one tough man!
Will be great to see what the range report turns out like for this one!
Lot of envious folks here drooling over this one, congratulations once more!

One of the guys in the BGRC has an 8 Bore double originally from India, its magnificent with incredible gold wire inlays and its extremely accurate. Recoil is definitely noticeable tough and at one event where the shooter was required to sit on the ground he was physically moved backwards a small amount each time he fired. This was closely followed by a foul mouthed tirade complaining about said recoil, it was bloody hilarious to watch. He did however win the event with a killer target.

Matt.

buckstix:
I had a very nice Alex Henry ULH double-eight in my gunsafe for the best part of a year a while back.
Didn't belong to me unfortunately, but I got it shooting really well with nitro-for-black and a 2oz round ball in the long case.
Here's the load FYI:

65gr Blue Dot, heavy card over-powder wad, then two and a quarter sheets of Viva paper towel ("kitchen paper" in the US?) rammed hard,
then another heavy card wad under the projectile. Crimp needs to be solid.
Initial efforts with a light crimp produced the occasional barely perceptible hang-fire.

With that load, regulation was perfect in that particular rifle. No guarantees in your Rodda of course.

...and congrats on acquiring this marvelous double eight. They were a milestone rifle in the history of Brit big game hunting, particularly in Africa, bridging the gap between the large bore muzzle loader and the nitro express.
...and Jack Lott's example might just be the most famous of them all in an American context.

Personally, I would kinda prefer Gerald Burrard's one...

You mention the "long" case. I have brass that is 3-1/4" long. Do you think that can be used in a 3-1/2" chamber?

I read about this gun while researching my 2 Jack Lott 458 Win Mag rifles - I never thought the day would come when I would have the opportunity to own it. This behemoth makes my 700NE look like a baby brother. As soon as I can locate some balls or bullets (molds are on order) I will post a range report.
