Nice Jeffery Game Gun Inbound
      #392098 - 17/06/25 11:20 PM

Just picked up a lovely vintage game gun in top condition during a recent trip to Victoria for some game-bird shooting with a few good mates.
Chance drop-in to Danny Ryan's shop on the way back from the Murray.
Couldn't leave this little gem on the shelf!

Apologies for the average photos, improv shop-counter backdrop!

Its an ejector of course, number one of a pair, and a screw-grip to boot! How good is that!

Gorgeous wood, may have been restocked, then lengthened with a stock extension.
I will be able to trim at least half of that extension off for my length of pull.

Chokes are open, so should be perfect for non-toxic shot.

Can't wait for it to arrive!
...followed by the bloody paperwork with in-built delays of course.

2 3/4" chambers, I suspect with those wide breeches.
Nice gun if it was in my lockup.

What you would pay for its twin & the case they can in with!
Marvellous heirloom Marrakai & a Jeffery to boot!
If you trimmed that extra bit of wood off & put a good Silver pad on that old girl it might be the right length for you after all?

Very nice Marakai. Beautiful engraving. How old do you think? Pre 1920s by the number but Jefferys can be a bit confusing in this regard.

Thanks gentlemen.
2 3/4 chambers by the gauge, not marked on the flats.
Could have been lengthened but I doubt it, on account of well-defined (short!) forcing cones.

...and agree about the age Clay:
I have always harbored the notion that the screw grip was too expensive to produce for boxlock shotguns after the 'roaring twenties', but may be wrong on that.
Will do a bit more arm-chair research when it arrives in my gunsafe.

Edit: Nigel Brown's Vol.1 gives the date range for the serial number block containing this gun as 1907 - 1912.

From memory, think it was Anson push-rod fastener, will confirm in the fullness of time!

Barry: you might be right about fitting a thick pad.
Trouble with routinely shooting buffalo rifles is that fitting a pad to a game gun didn't even enter my head!
...but a red pad would look good.

My collector mate and I have been conspiring to toss up a rack of Jefferys at the next Arms Collectors' display at one of the rural shows.

I have a .400 double and a 6.5 Mannlicher, while my friend has original Jeffery Mausers in .404 and .275. We badly needed a nice shotgun to make the set of five.

Done and dusted!

Trouble is, history has left us with no known photo or portrait of William Jackman Jeffery to augment the display!
Without back-story or provenance, to the general public these guns are just things.
Nice things, mind!

Should add, I had been hanging out for an affordable Jeffery sidelock, particularly their London Pattern with No.2 Design engraving, but pretty sure I would end up in the grave still waiting!

This little box-lock ejector will certainly tide me over.

Great looking gun Tony, looking forward to seeing some more pics once you get it. By the way I hear your Pheasant/Partridge shoot went exceptionally well, apparently everyone had a ball.

Matt.

Yeah..., nah to the GI offerings Clay, really nice No.1 Design London Pattern but 7.75K USD before import would stop me in my tracks!
And those lurid re-colored examples don't float my boat.
...but thanks for the heads-up, mate. Should keep a more regular eye on the US market.

This style of thing would pique my interest though:

Had a blast on the pheasants and partridges Matt, made all the more enjoyable by great company and perfect circumstances.

The Jeffery BLE described here would have been right at home, and may well be the preferred companion for the next shoot!

I think everyone wants this to arrive for you mate, a very desirable piece to say the very least!
Speaking of non-toxic shot, would you run bismuth thru this or load steel but at lower pressure?

I wonder if this old girl was made originally made for a lady being so short before being lengthened?
Would be interesting but how can you tell if the original timber even with something as old as this to determine if original or not?
I don't thinks the Poms stamped the stocks with numbers - especially shotguns?
Shame you didn't have the other No2 gun or their gun box

Marrakai, we need a thread on that shoot as well. I look every few months at the opportunities of a pheasant, partridge type shoots. Been hanging out for the same for many years. The cost per bird is a barrier. But I've been updated on some European prices for cost per bird and the prices weren't a lot different. Thought of breeding some myself, the easiest way to get into it myself. Seeing one of our German members gets to shoot two (wild) pheasants per year, I can manage more than that! Though released. Some escapees might even survive foxes and cats over time.

Marrakai, we need a story and ideally some pictures from your bird shooting shikari.

Maybe your next shoot with a Jeffery.

PS Added. What would be cool, would be a NitroExpress game bird shoot, or shoots, annually in Australia or NZ. Plus maybe USA and Europe. If there was interest to put a minimum group together.

Congratulations on your new Jeffery acquisition.

The first shotgun I shot pheasants with was in Cornwall in the UK, driven pheasants was with a shotgun borrowed off the farmer, was a 12-bore Jeffery. 1989. I hadn't heard of many Jeffery shotguns at that point, only rifles, so thought it was quite unusual.

Now I think I've mentioned it already, but I acquired last year a 16-bore W.J. Jeffery boxlock shotgun.

I shot it an informal clay target shoot, but at the end, shooting upmextra leftover clays, As often happens my physical spinal neck issues had set in. The first round hardly missed a clay, maybe one. The second round, missed a lot. The third round with the 16-bore missed the lot. A seized up neck and bad headache doesn't help. That test of that 16-bore Jeffery was unsuccessful did to my limitations not the gun, Hopefully it will shoot much better when I do my part. The factory shells unused had a very acrid powder odour when opening the breech after firing

Getting 16-bore ammunition is a severe limitation. I acquired a 250 cartridge box of 4 shot and 6 shot. Not successful yet with obtaining 7 1/2 to 9 shot size.

My gun is probably not to your guns standard, I'll pull it out when home.

It is light and handy, Best of all is one choke measures at cylinder. The left barrel measures at a strange three-quarters? I would have hoped one-quarter choke. I will pattern it one day.

I would like to use it on quail, smong other game birds.

As a 16-bore, undesirable these days it seems, the price was in the lower expected range. I too couldn't pass it up Maybev$800 plus or minus from memory.

I'd love to show my Jeffery along with yours. Alas they might need to meet up only one-day in the bush again.

I hope your very much enjoy your new 115 +- year old Jeffery.i wonder where it has been carried, by whom, and for what?

***

No images of William Jackman Jeffery exist? We must restart a search.

BTW you need a Jeffery case label for your new vintage Jeffery. When you've done all the work, send me a quality graphic file, or even a couple of suitable printed ones, and extra or two, one for my .450 NE, when youndomyoyrs. I'll swap you some nice bottles of red wine., if you like.
