Calculation shows that getting 1400 fps would raise recoil from 58 lbs to over 130 lbs. I'm not sure if I would be better off just raising the front sight so impact would be 4" lower at 25 yards. If sighted 3" high at 25 yards, it would be dead-on at 100 yards.

Well, that's what I did. Instead of increasing velocity to lower the impact, I raised the front site. According to my math, I needed to raise the front site by 0.12" which would result in hitting 3" high at 25 yards, thus being dead-on at 100 yards. As I have done on some of my other rifles, I glued on a small copper hood over the original site. This is easily removed by heating with a match so that the original site is not harmed. Next trip to the range should tell if I'm successful.

A wonderful 8-bore BP acquisition. Add a second plus a gunbearer and you would have a historic ivory hunter armoury.

Good job.
You can even add the pin to make that wedge a captured wedge as designed.

Hello DarylS .... Yes, today I added a pin to keep the wedge captive, so it won't get lost.

That browning is something again Buckstix, you don't really appreciate it until you see a close up of it - marvellous!
Handy trick with the front sight!

Buckstix, I like what you did for the front sight. That is a great idea for a somewhat common problem with vintage rifles.

Thanks. I used the copper from a 41 rim-fire cartridge. Its nice and thin and easy to shape.

Raising the front site. What a good idea. I missed the target and front sight posts previously.

According to my LoadBook calculations, raising the front site, and keeping the muzzle velocity at 920 fps, will result in the following trajectories.

25 yards = +3.10" = 1518 ft/lbs ME
50 yards = +5.06" = 1479 ft/lbs ME
75 yards = +4.31" = 1445 ft/lbs ME
105 yards = +0.25" = 1405 ft/lbs ME
125 yards = -5.58" = 1370 ft/lbs ME

Now I know what to do for my Martini!
Shoots 5"high at 25 yards getting 1215fps.
I use a full service charge of 85gn 2Fg BP muzzle measures 0.465".
I'm hoping it slugs up enough as my mould casts 0.465", perhaps I need a tighter fit at the throat?
Sorry to hi jack this thread!

Yes, I have two dozen different Martini rifles and half of them have front sites that have been raised in a similar manner.

Well, back from the range. With the front site raised, and a slight increase in powder, here is the result.

0 yards = +0.00" = 1795 ft/lbs ME
25 yards = +3.50" = 1748 ft/lbs ME
50 yards = +6.30" = 1682 ft/lbs ME
75 yards = +6.60" = 1632 ft/lbs ME
100 yards = +4.60" = 1585 ft/lbs ME
125 yards = +0.00" = 1541 ft/lbs ME
150 yards = -7.60" = 1500 ft/lbs ME
