I sold my A-Square 577 T-REX & bought an AHR 600 OVERKILL
      #391626 - 19/05/25 12:14 PM

Hello all,

Last month I reluctantly sold my A-Square 577 T-REX - so ..... I bought an AHR 600 OVERKILL to take its place. This OVERKILL is a product of AHR (American Hunting Rifles) - custom built by Wayne Jacobson. The rifle is much better in person than the pictures shown below. Wayne is truly a Master Gun builder. Unfortunately, Wayne retired this year and there will be no more AHR Customs. A big loss to the custom gun world.

I loved my T-REX because it was famous for its field performance - launching a 750g projectile at 2460 fps = 10,075 ft/lbs muzzle energy - well, the OVERKILL launches a 900g projectile at 2450 fps = 11,980 ft/lbs muzzle energy. Unfortunately, with the added energy, comes added recoil. The 14-1/2 pound T-REX generates 170 ft/lbs of recoil, while the 11-3/4 pound OVERKILL generates 270 ft/lbs of recoil. The T-REX tames its recoil with 3 mercury recoil reducers - the OVERKILL tames its recoil with a massive muzzle brake. Having personal experience shooting both, I can confirm that the OVERKILL has much more felt recoil than the T-REX - but I love it.

A target shooting my "fun load" is shown below. Only 70 ft/lbs recoil.

Here is a video of a fellow (not me) shooting an AHR 600 OVERKILL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9v8jxCAppq8

Here is my OVERKILL - it is nearly identical to the one in the video ....

Phil Shoemaker's daughter Tia a hunting fishing guide in the family, shot a .600 Overkill when she was about 14 or 15yrs. old. 3 shots, IIRC.
Impressive recoil for such a small lass to soak up, but she stood into it and handled it just fine, as I am sure Buckstix does when he shoots it.

I suspect he's been hacked. I don't believe he'd really do that.

I can understand if it means needing more room in the gunsafe!
I currently have a BBK .585 Nyati in my custody and it takes up the space of two normal rifles.
Not mine, unfortunately...

The story about selling my T-Rex is very bitter-sweet. These T-Rex rifles are so very rare. I'll never have a chance to buy another one. I had owned 4 over the years and this was the last one.

A guy posted a want ad saying he wanted a T-Rex to add to his A-Square collection. He pestered me for 2 weeks to sell it, and I finally caved-in to let it go. This was a very difficult decision to reach, but I thought I was helping an A-Square collector to give it a new home. And then ... the guy backed out the day after he was to send pmt. I am 73 years old and I have been dealing with guns for over 53 years - This was the first time that I had a gun guy back out of a commitment.

Since I had already posted all the pictures, I was ticked, and I added another 2K to the price and listed it on the same forum. It sold in 2 days.

So I needed another Big Bore to fill the missing T-Rex and bought this OVERKILL.

I added a scope to better my groups. Its a Burris 1-4x24 with a very unique lighted red reticle. Perfect for quick shots on Dangerous game. My old eyes don't do well with iron sites. Next trip to the range will prove the results.

Certainly looks the part on your Overkill Buckstix!
Fingers crossed the groups improve.

good pick up of the Overkill but the recoil would overkill my shoulder.

Here's an "update" ... I bought a second 600 OVERKILL ... if one OVERKILL is good, 2 OVERKILLS are better. Kind of overkill, of OVERKILLS ...

This second one is pretty special - this was Wayne Jacobson's personal OVERKILL that he used in Dangerous Game competition. That's right, Mr. AHR's personal rifle. Specs are: - 20" barrel, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Reflex Sight, Winchester Swing Safety, 11 pound 4 ounces, Composite Stock (painted Brick Red), 14" LOP, Front Bridge removed and rounded. NO MUZZLE BRAKE (that concerns me)

This should be a real dandy at the range - range report to follow.

Shooting anything like that is WAY beyond me these days and has been for a number of years. Funny is that I used to revel in shooting guns that kicked like hell, that others wouldn't shoot due to the recoil.

Well, I am 73 and can still tolerate a couple of full-house maximum loads. But, for fun shooting I taylor my reloads to about 70 - 80 ft/lbs of recoil energy.
