Mounting them forward makes no difference, they still work perfectly. For me mounting a red dot on the receiver of my CZ550 in 505 or 416 positions the sight way to high as both stocks are setup for open sights, therefore mounting a red dot where the rear sight base sits positions the dot at the correct height using a Burris FF4. I have designed a rear sight base that allows a FF4 to be mounted with a QD mount but still has a single standing leaf. A quick flick of a lever removes the red dot and the open sights can be used. I have 3D printed one in plastic and tried it and the position of the dot is perfect for the stock and very easy to use. Now I just have to make one in steel if I can ever get onto my own machines rather than customers jobs lol.

Matt.

I was recently shown a mounting base for a Sky Link satellite receiver that had been 3D printed using Kevlar. Would not a scope mounting base made from the same material be as light and strong?

The picture is of a CAD model I am working on to test my design. Mind you the Mauser is a straight bolt handle military version and will of course not be that way on the real rifle. And the barrel length is purposely cut short just for easy of working in the CAD environment. Having said that, you can see this is what the action and barrel would look like with an Aimpoint ACRO sight. Of course that is just one thought but I was hoping it would let everyone know what my vision for this rifle is so far.
I do like the comment concerning the new fangled telescope sights never catching on. I have run similar thru my mind as I have worked on this project. But "New fangled" has happened more times then not as that is how we have got to where we are. It is called innovation.

With vintage rifles it becomes decorum versus function.

I have number of standard large Martini Sporting rifles. I would never consider scope mounting them, let alone mounting a red dot device on them. Maintaining the open sights on these guns and being able to shoot shoot them was incentive to getting recent cataract surgery. Decorum over function--modify my eyes before the gun.

I do have a number the small action BSA-Francotte target rifles all but one wears a scope. Decorum-they look correct. With is decorum comes function, these are some amazingly accurate rifles.

I have been tempted to mount one gun up with a red dot and try. I hate to mess around with a gun of proven accuracy.

I have mounted red dots a couple of my AR's. But so far, all I have seem to have done is turn 300 yards guns into 100 yard guns. Not impressed-yet. Decorum passes, function, degrades.

For 20 years or so I have had a William Sukalle large Martini actioned target rifle.(gun built in 1938-does that qualify for "Vintage"?) The previous owner had a Unertl scope on it and it made a nice looking package. He sold me the gun and it has languished in my safe ever since. I recently found a Unertl scope for this gun.

How's this for Decorum.

Have not shot it yet. Hope it passes function.

Wonder how a red dot woudl do on my Ruger No. 1?

Used to love those scopes & seeing them on single shot varmint rifles of the 50's and 60's.
I used one in the 1990 BC Summer games on a .222 Sako. The spring was missed and the scope moved about 3/8" forward at each shot. The scope had to be pulled back after each shot or the next one would drop out about 1/2" low. Prone match & I got the gold, but only shot a 99 6X. I was quite excited after seeing 9 10's in a row, and forgot to pull the scope back on the last shot. IT happens.
