WTB 9.3x82r brass
      #390312 - 11/03/25 01:46 PM

I am looking for 9.3 x 82r brass to shoot in a double rifle.

Buffalo Arms in USA carried 9.3x82 Bertram brass but have been out of stock for about a year.

This brass isn't listed in Graf, Midway, RMC, BertramUSA or Quality Cartridge.

93x64,

Thanks for the info. I will email Bruce. I was concerned that he didn't have a way to get brass to an individual in the US but perhaps he dioes.

The 9.3x82R started out as a BP round, similar to the shorter 9.3x72R. I guess the idea was to get a few more grains of powder in the case.

A 9.3x72r fits in the chamber but is 10mm (0.4") short. I think the prior owner may have shot 9.3x72r in the rifle but not sure the accaracy would have been great. I would rather shoot the gun using the correct ammo.

JJ Donnely shows in his Book on Wildcats, how to extend normal brass. I did this with some .45/70's out to 3". They worked fine with BP loads. I don't know about smokeless loads.

Daryl,

Thanks. I will look at Donnely.

I remember Nonte has a book about reloading all the unusual cartridges and including extending cartridge length by adding (soldering) tubing and/or the neck of other cartridges to the cartridge that you want to use as a base cartridge. .

The case being 0.4" short will not affect accuracy, so long as you obtain the proper regulating velocity.

Buckstix,

Thank you. Part of my concern is that using 9.3x72r ammo, there would be an added -.4" of freebore which should impact accuracy. particularly with cast bullets which I normally use.

Apparently the previous owner shot it as a 9.3x72r or at least claimed that is what the rifle was. Hopefully I can get the correct brass and dies.

I will try 9.3x72r ammo but will keep looking for the longer brass.

BTW, the 9.3x82r has a 3 1/4" case. Hmmm, similar to the old British BPW cartridges but in 9.3mm.

I believe that recently (last couple of months?), Bertram has organised a couple of US distributors for his products. An email to him should be able to confirm one way or the other.

Hunter,

Thanks for the update. I will contact Bruce. Earlier this week, they said they didn't have any 9.3x82R in stock but will rin some in a couple of months.

This may be a case of lining an existing case with a thin walled brass tube to get the length you need.
Maybe blow out a 9.3X72R and solder in the extra neck made from a section of another more easily found case - 357 Magnum maybe.
One of our fellow members here has shown this technique before but I cannot recall who it was.

Ben & Daryl,

I remade two 9.3x72r into 9.3x82r by soldering an extension onto the 9.3x72r cases. I ran these theu a 9.3x72 sizing die and they look fine. I will fireform these in my double rifle.

I checked with RMC and they said they could make brass cases. I will send the fireformed cases to them to assist their effort.

The good thing is that the remade cases sized completely in my 9.3x72 sizing dies. New 9.3x82 dies are 14 - 18 months out and cast ~ $250.

If I knew how to post pictures, I would post a picture of my remade 9.3x83r brass and my new rifle.

What did you use for "soldering" the extensions, lead based solder or a silver based solder?

I've successfully repaired neck cracks in some of my old Berdan primed Kynoch 404 Jeffery cases that have cracked on the first firing of factory ammo and also a few RWS cases that have cracked after many firings when I've been a bit lazy keeping up with a regular annealing progamme. For the repairs I use a 'dirty' steel rod (natural black finish) that's a slip fit in the case necks to prevent run through of the solder and use a low temp silver solder, trade name "silfos".
This works really well matching the colour of the brass cases so an invisible repair in most cases while sizing and annealing perfectly with the parent brass of the case.

I used brass tubing from the local "hobby" store. This tubing is already annealed and has a .015" wall. Each successive tube size is a sliding fit into the next larger size. The pieces are about 12" long, iirc. That was a long time ago. The tubing is in a rack on a counter top or shelf & runs up to about 1" in diameter.
I have also used it for making powder measures for my BP guns, shoving a piece of wood into one end with a cross pin then cutting to whatever length I needed, from measures only .030" OD holding 20gr. pdr. up to 5/8" & holding 125gr., 140gr. and 165gr. for the 14 bore rifle.

John,

Good question. First, what I used as an extension was a ~ 1" piece of another case that went over a new 9.3x72r parent case.

My thoughts were that the extension will be on the outside of the parent case. As the parent case expands during firing, it would press the extension against the chamber & minimize any movement with the extension.

My first effort was merely to use friction but that only resulted in the extension getting stuck in my sizing die.

I then cleaned both the parent and extension cases, fluxed both with Stay Clean and soldered with a high strength, low temperature silver bearing solder (Stay Brite #8. I then sized the extended case and loaded it with 0.5 cc of Bullseye and cream of wheat with wax plug to fireform the case.

Now I have some split cases for vintage rifles that I may see if they can saved for low pressure looads.

FYI: In the past, I had used 1.0 cc of Bullseye with cream of wheat and was plug but split several cases that were fairly undersized for the chamber.

Daryl mentioned brass thin wall brass tubing which he bought at a hobby shop. I remember seeing those at a local mom & pop hardward store (since closed). I saw that these could be bought via the internet and may buy some.

If anyone is interested in thinwall brass tubing, this is the K&S website that I saw and consideed buying tubing from:
