Reloading Shotgun Shotshells and slugs
      #390098 - 02/03/25 04:14 PM

A thread to ask questions on the topic. It's been a while since I replaced shot shells. Probably because shotgun ammunition has been cheap, and it is easier to buy a slab of shot shells.

But buying 16-bore shotgun ammunition is expensive. And small bird shot, 7 1/2 to 9s, impossible to get. My 16-bore needs some 8s and 9s.

Bismuth? Absolutely impossible to obtain loaded ammunition. Perhaps bismuth shot can be sent over?

12-bore 2 1/2" loaded ammo. More versatility with reloaded shells.

Steel shot? Ffff that. Good to lay in good supplies of lead shot forbth future. Ffff fake environmental green BS.

It's harder to get stuff all the time. Lay in supplies while one can.

16-bore, is there only one shell length size? That's what the gun shops tell me.

Currently, yes.
However in the past 2 9/16" was standard. Changed about 1930, w/ many chambers cut deeper to handle the longer 2 3/4"
There is not and never was a STANDARD 3" 16 ga.

common length today is the 16/70 with a 70 mm long case
https://www.sellier-bellot.cz/en/products/shotgun-shells/list/12/

but the 16/67,5 is also made to be used in any 65 mm long chamber

https://www.sellier-bellot.cz/en/products/shotgun-shells/list/10/

I see the czech make now also 65 mm long shells again but this is new to me

https://www.frankonia.de/p/sellier-bello...ategoryId=62235

the 16/67,5 is available with steel and bismuth pellets

https://www.frankonia.de/p/fob/16-67-5-z...ategoryId=62235

another option would be the italians

https://www.baschieri-pellagri.com/it/catalogo/cartucce+da+caccia/1/1/16.aspx

the short shell is called here 67 mm long but its the same. because the plastic shell is much thinner than a paper shell they made it 67 or 67,5 mm long so its more space with a star crimp and still safe enough.

fiocchi have also the 67, smm long shells

https://fiocchi.com/en/catalog/ammo/shotshells/16-gauge.html

you better ask the australian importer for this firms directly.

Yes, lanc.
IMO best thing John can do is find a cheap standard hull & good load for it and trim and roll his own.
Hull length is really easy to deal w/ if one roll crimps & is not bound to availability of "correct"-length folded crimp factory shells.

The 1902 16 bore Husky I had, had 2 5/8" chamber actual length.
The factory 2 3/4" 16 bore Federal ammo, was under 2 3/4" and worked just fine in my 2 5/8" chamber. Might have been 2 9/16"? or not.
When fired, the 2 3/4" Federal loads had just barely a slight curl for the last 1/16" of the case, indicating the slightly shorter chamber.

British made 16 Bore guns use 2 1/2" shells not the 2 5/8" that the Europeans use. Game bore in Melbourne stock a large range of 16 Bore shells.
