Great looking gun, Ball and Shot guns by Rigby are very rare.

Did you buy it from one of the guys in BGRC Vic. as the chap I bought my CW Andrews from was selling a Rigby B&S just like that.

LOL obviously the same chap. Looking forward to seeing what it shoots like, do you have ammunition ready to go or do you have to start making some.

I have all the components required to put some rounds together, so will get things moving on that front soon. The bores look perfect, so hopefully I can find a combination that works well.

That's interesting. Do you know what the recommended powder charge is for ball? I see 546gr. of shot on the underside of the barrels and at 13/1 it's a very tight 12 bore(I think). Have you slugged the bores yet to find their actual diameter?

I am not sure on the factory recommended powder charge for ball. I have not slugged the bores as yet, however the spare projectiles that came with the gun are .724"

Same as my French shot and ball gun, 2 1/2". I'll keenly follow your progress and loads. A year ago! Gathering dust.

What's the best to use, normal plastic hulls, or brass hulls?

What shotgun powder do you have?

I've not thought about what powder is used for the "ball" loads as well?

Shotgun powder is hard to get. I do have some old Du Pont 800X. I've been planning to use 800X for my .38 Super handgun. But I don't have any handgun reloading gear yet.

Congratulations with the Rigby.

I have a similar one, just a hammergun with jones underlever.
Mine has a serie number very close to this gun.

Mine starts out with .742" and ends up with .735" at the muzzle.

These Rigby B&S were proofed af rifles what equalled to 3drams Black(powerwise). Ours just with similar smokeless.

My barrel has 3 indentments which is clearly visible if one put a .740" roundball in the barrel.

MIne has a slight higher serienumber. My was made in 1903 and bought in 1905 by a James Jennings(he wrote a book).

As stated these Rigby`s ball & shot are very very rare. I actually don`t think they were popular...bot some bought them like you and me.

The gun was supplied with a good lot of new Winchester compression formed plastic cases and roll crimping tooling.
It has been a very long time since I have reloaded shotgun cartridges, but I think I still have an old can of Hercules Green Dot powder in my inventory. I definitely need to do some more research on current powders etc for these type guns.

The 3 dram load equivalency with 1 1/8oz. shot is approximately 1,200fps.
Smokeless powders in this range for target loads, can produce around the same pressure as black powder did, however they are fast TRAP powders,
like 700X, Red Dot and perhaps Green Dot as well. Green Dot and Red Dot powders have green and red dots in the powder, respectively, for identification purposes.
In shotshells, powder like SR7625 and SR4756 can produce higher vel. at lower pressures in the 8,000PSI range as well.
800X is a slower burning powder than 700X, and is in the range of Unique and Herco, seems to me.
Having a Lyman Shotshell Loading Handbook is very helpful,
even though you have short cases. This just means you will likely have card and fiber wads which reduce pressures as well. A chronograph is handy -
but needs screen protectors if not RADAR machines. I chronographed my shotgun using shot quite effectively, without any protection, however I removed the overhead
diffuser panels and shot well over the screens.

Thank you rm. I would love to see some pics of your Rigby B&S gun - I am a sucker for nice underlever hammer guns / rifles!
My gun was delivered to a Mr WC Neilsen on the 6th August 1903. I haven't researched Mr Neilsen as yet, but the gun ended up in Africa early in its life, as it has a stamp on the stock dated 1904 (Mossamedes which is in Angola) - unless it is Mossamedes in Brazil?
