Received one of my shipments from England today. The no maker's name 8 bore single shotgun and the Westley Richards 16 bore muzzle loader with case. Here's some photos of the 8 bore. That's a 2 3/4 12 gauge next to the 8 bore brass case.

I can't find that BNP under a crown mark anywhere. What is it? Online source says proof for nitro after 1954. So reproof?

According to my copy of Richard Arnold's "The Shooters Handbook" published 1955, the new proof mark BNP under a crown standing for Birmingham Nitro Proof, came into operation 1st February 1955 under the new Rules of Proof 1954.

The other markings on the barrel of your 8 bore such as the nominal bore in inches, disappearance of the word CHOKE and reference to service pressure are consistent with the new 1954 rules of proof.

Further to above the crossed swords with L C 1 is the Birmingham proof symbol of the examiner, the number being the rank of the examiner (1 = senior examiner) and LC the year of proof 1985.

Thanks Eagle. so I'm thinking that it was reproofed in 1985. Most likely over a hundred years after being made.

That big 8 should do wonders on geese up your way Casper!
Do you intent to shoot as Nitro or just BP considering its age?
Your load data would be good if you get a chance to do check out the choke & how it performs at different ranges!

That's a cool gun. I'd love an 8 bore "pelter". Ducks over decoys. Quite illegal here, though.

Illegal here as well. I intend to use Blue Dot when I get some 7 bore overshot cards.

Weren't some of the 8-bore elephant guns smooth bores?
