B&C records, no surprise 30-06 #1 caliber
      #389706 - 15/02/25 11:49 PM

Does anyone find the following as any surprise? I did not

"What is the Most Popular Caliber in the Records?
If you’ve read this far, it’s only fair that we answer our original question. With 1,216 entries, the .30-06 Springfield is the most popular caliber used on trophies in the Boone and Crockett records."

This is from a Boone & Crockett wedsite

No surprise for me either

I'm not American but have used my .30-06;since just after High School, maybe 1983. I've used it in Austal, NZ, Zimbabwe. I reach for it usually first still. For medium game. Out of several choices. Maybe one or two might one day surplant it.

Good to see you around, Phil.
My love of that 1936 M70 might have weened a little bit with the acquisition of that 6.5x57 with the Swarovski in claw mounts.

What's all this fuss about the 30-06, it is just a passing fad

No surprises really.

If I ever acquire a M98 classic rifle in 7x57 / .275 Bore , it might become my go to medium game rifle.

Another of Phil's favourites.

DD- I find that quite interesting. Did they use a rimmed case?
I wasn't aware of that.

The '06 is a 60,000 psi(SAAMI) round same as the .280Rem., which is interesting because the .270 on the same case,
is a 65,000psi round and chambered and barreled on exactly the same actions.
This little address has become handy at times. Good narration on pressure as well.

History has long said the 30-06 Martini used in the 1920 US Olympic shooting team was a Hartman Hammerli Martini in standard 30-06.

I just now found a Video that may change that historical fact to myth-maybe.

https://youtu.be/THoJmUsjBWM?si=5AaUnDPR5Wm4KHGi

Morris Fisher shot the Hartman-Hammerli-Martini so badly, that at the last minute he switched to the 03 Springfield in 30-06 and won the Olympic medal in Free rifle.

I did not find what cartridge Morris Fishers Martini was chambered in. I am going to call the NRA Museum later this morning and see if I can find out.

That was an interesting clip.
The 03 they showed was straight-up military with open sights. Is that what he used? Or, did he use an 03 set up for match shooting with apertures?

Watch the video again. at 52 seconds note the rifle Fisher is holding. Aperture sights. Also note the trigger guard.

This rifle appears to be a cut down Springfield.

Supports the Lordship of the 30-06 on the range as well as in the field
