New user need help identifying this Mauser. It's a military small ring action with 7.785'' between trigger guard screws. 8x57 caliber . no markings except serial numbers (all matching). on the military stepped barrel, I have another serial number (353144) . Maybe there is a marking under the scope mount but I hesitate to dismantle ... this rifle is really well balanced . the stock with "Bäckchen" and the attachment with a wedge were typical for Suhl/Zella Mehlis gunmaker builds before WW1 but also into the 1920s. looks like an ex military rifle was used here for making a hunting rifle.

whats with the proof marks? seems to be the I caliber.

thinking about this my opinion is the barrel was changed sometimes.
maybe because the origal barrel was bad, damaged or the owner was unable to find 8x57I ammo and go the easy way.

My money's on a commercial Gewehrfabrik Danzig. If you look them up I think you'll agree that it's very likely what you have.

I think if you really want to know what this action is you need to find out what may be hidden under that scope mount so you can take a couple good pictures of the left side and top side of the action. There may be nothing there but you won't ever know until you look.
