I always thought the 303 had been banned in Australia, a contingency after the Japanese bombing and strafing of Darwin and hence the 22/303, 243/303, 25/303 and 270/303 cartridges based on the necked down 303 were developed.
The 303 was never banned here in NZ and cutdown or sporterized LE's and SMLE's were popular rifles for civilian and Government forest service culling use. The necked down 303 cartridges were all but unknown or at least unused here. Parker Hale produced three grades of sporterized versions of the SMLE which were very popular in NZ, I see them still coming up for second hand sale online occasionally.

Don't know where I got it from, but my weird ctg. box has a properly base stamped .270/303. Just for the heck of it, I made up .22/303, .6mm/303, .35/303 and .375/303 cases along with a .40 Maynard (IIRC) using .303 brass.

Sorry I'm a little late to this thread -- Huvius, that is a beautiful rifle. Everything appeals to my taste. Congrats.

Can you share a little more about the rifle? how much does it weigh? How do it balance in the hands and come to the shoulder?

Again, congrats on a lucky find.

Chris

It wouldn't surprise me for the govt to disarm the civilian population before a possible invasion.

Huvius, very nice. What is he rifles weight? It's quite hefty looking beside the rook rifle. But that might just be relative.

Thanks for posting.

It is just about right at 7 pounds - maybe 7lb / .5oz
The barrel is 28" long so difficult to balance on my kitchen scale
