Looks like a rare pattern #3 375 nitro express on auction. Interesting to see what it goes for.

I would certainly be very happy to own it, providing the bore was usable.

Nice representable rifle in a hard to find cartridge and would not kick it out of the gun safe if it found it's way in. Too bad its missing it's dust cover, cartridge cut off, and the auction house doesn't give any details about any makers marks out on the barrel.

Interesting rifle.

Isn't the .375 Nitro Express a 2 1/2" flanged cartridge? Is the brass available? I haved seen several double rifles in that caliber. I think it is like the 9.5 MS. Am I correct?

Wikipedia has reasonable summary of the cartridge, but no images for some reason.

The Handloader Cartridge Board site is probably better.

Bruce Bertram makes properly head-stamped brass.

Tks Mat. Head dia. .456" - so like a lengthened .303 case.
Mine all measure .457", but, so close.
I used cut-off .303's for bullets for one of my .458's.

Model M1910 Mannlicher Schoenauer was 9.5X57, a.k.a. .375 Nitro Express Rimless. Case length 2.25 inch:

The .375 Flanged Nitro Express (Velopex) is a rimmed cartridge which predates the .375 Nitro Express Rimless and had case length of 2.5 inches.

Article Flanged 375 Nitro Express

The .375 H&H Belted Magnum is a different cartridge still.

This is from the article linked here: "In 1899, the British developed a predecessor, which was known as the .375 Flanged Nitro Express. This cartridge featured a straight-rimmed case with a length of 2.5 inches and a rim diameter of .523 inches and offered ballistics quite close to the .38/55 cartridge. This cartridge, even though almost unknown in the United States, can be encountered in rifles still in shooting condition. Even though the ammunition is no longer manufactured, anyone wanting to reload this caliber can fabricate cases from new Hornady .405 Winchester cases or use .30/40 cases. The .30/40 case ends up a little short by about .250 inches but is still very usable."
Using the 405 may require a little trimming of the rim and base diameters but probably the best choice if actual brass is not found. 303 Brit and 30-40 could be used but would be short in case length.
Keep in mind it is a nitro express about the same as the 375 NE rimless M/S, good cartridges but certainly not magnums.

just safe the pics

"Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) Lee-Enfield Pattern Bolt Action Sporting Rifle, #11990, .375 Nitro Express cal., 25" barrel, rust blue finish; checkered walnut one-piece pistol grip stock with blank round escutcheon plate in the underside of the buttstock, which ends with a smooth steel buttplate, slightly proud at the toe, providing a 14.25" LOP. Rifle also features a replacement front sight in the original dovetail, three-leaf express rear sight, and detachable 3-round magazine. Factory markings are clear, with "BSA Co." on right side of the action body and "B.S.A." on barrel at breech, with numerous English acceptance and proof marks on the right side. Mfg'd prior to WWI. Rifle is in fine overall condition, retaining approx. 90%-92% thinning rust blue finish, with wear at the muzzle, scratches and scattered spots of minor surface erosion. Receiver retains considerable toning finish with tasteful border engraving on the straps and trigger guard. Base of the magazine displays 70%-80% coverage in fine scroll engraving, screw heads are engraved, and the buttplate shows light border engraving. Magazine shows plum colored toning. Stock is in very good condition with scattered indentations and bruises that are consistent with years of field use; checkering remains very good with some flattening and smoothing. Action functions smoothly and locks up securely. Bore is very good with traces of light erosion and well-defined rifling. Initially referred to as Lee-Speed rifles, BSA and LSA stopped marking their rifles as such after 1914. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (C&R"

Yes, missing dust cover, but they can be found. You have to remember that the 375 never came with a cutoff. As you can see in the pics, there is no slot cut in the receiver. What makes this one so rare is the fact it is a pattern #3. I only ever seen one other 375 as a pattern #3. You probably won,t see another one in your lifetime. Bid wisely.
I was going to bid on it, but with the low Canadian dollar and the new export laws, what ever the hammer price is, it will be double in Canadian funds, not worth it for me.

LRF,
Thanks for teh info about cases. I was wondering how to make / get cases for a 375 2 1/2". Now I know. I have seen a few double rifles in this caliber.

If I see a nice one for a reasonable price (reasonable to me), I may pursue it.

When I said that the 375 2 1/2" was similar to the 375 MS, I may not have been that clear. I meant it is similar in performance, though that may not be correct if the ballistics are close to the 38/55. Regardless, it should be a great deer, black bear, hog cartridge and also good for ringing gongs. .

yes, the best basic case is 405 Win

I have made brass by using 9,3x74R. you have to turn it down over the rim, the rim also a little bit.
rim is also not thick enough but in my own Mannlicher M 92 it was never a problem.

I see a .456" base. The .405 Winchester has a .461" base. The two are not compatible. Like the article says, .30/40 brass can be used but will be 1/4" short (just like using .303 brass).

Image of Lee Speed shows different (lower) British proof load than that of M1910 Mannlicher Schoenauer.

I'd load a bit light.

Lee speed, Cordite 40 grains behind 270 grain projectile:

Mannlicher Schoenauer M1910, 43 grains Cordite behind 270 grain projectile:

two

or three

.375 Flanged Nitro Express 270 grains bullet + 40 grains powder

9,5x56 Mannlicher Schönauer 270 grains bullet + 45 grains powder

and

.375 Rimless Nitro Express 270 grains bullet + 43 grains powder
maybe a tropical load of the original 9,5x56

for making things not so easy my mannlicher 92 in .375 Flanged is proofed for 40 grains powder and a 320 grains bullet

new made kynoch ammo is 2-3 mm to long to fit into the action. its possible to reduce oal with the seting die.

That has been my understanding.

British proof was 43 grains (.375 Nitro Express Rimless), DWM loaded 45 for the 9.5X57.

British proof was, however, for Cordite which was known for sensitivity to temperature.
