General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck
      #388026 - 04/12/24 01:44 AM

I'm attending this event this week, at my Naval Military Club.

Topic: The Undefeated German General,
At the outbreak of the First World War, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck was a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of the armed forces in the colony German East Africa (later Tanganyika and later still, Tanzania). He had available a garrison of about five thousand soldiers split more or less evenly between German nationals and locally raised African troops. With this small force he immediately attacked towns and lines of communication in British East Africa with success. Elsewhere the colonies of the scattered German colonial empire were quickly subdued and occupied by Allied forces but von Lettow-Vorbeck had the military skills, bushcraft and above all the leadership to maintain a disciplined army that fought doggedly until Germany surrendered in Europe.

Although he increased his force with local recruits they remained greatly outnumbered by British Imperial troops.…

Listened to "White Hunters" audio book last week that said a bit about him. Respected even by his enemies.

The British didn't trust their blacks. Only impressed/ forced them into being bearers. The Brits were afraid the black soldiers would rise up later. Indian troops were also used I believe.

On the other hand 95% of the German East African army was blacks. And fought loyally and well for von Lettow-Vorbeck. For the length of the war, undefeated until surrender AFTER the surrender of Germany.

One hears Britishers often claiming how aweful the Germsn colonies were and how badly the blacks were treated. Usually tainted with hints of NAZIism, not invented for a decade or two. Funny blacks in Tand0ganyika, now Tanzania are recorded as preferring the German colonial administration, compared to the racist hypocritical British colonial government. Fact. Rule of law, equal justice, for the whites.

The criticism probably comes from how the British stole all the land, farms, from the German, European, and Afrikaaner farmers and lanowners. After taking over Tanganyika.

All irrelevant to the topic. The East African Campaigns of WW1.

Dress code? The club does have a dress code, this event is jacketbandvtie. Very pukka.

My comrades at the dinner will gevacRoyal Horse Guards Major and a RAAF Group Captain. . To be presentable I'll have to go as "von Hahn". As many German African settlers suddenly gained a "von" settling in Africa.

Yes a Caesar in Africa. Marching his "legion" to attack and evade. To the end of the war.

Good book too.

I'll have to find my white pith helmet. And dress accordingly.

I have a golden tan jacket. White moleskin pants. Polished tan dress boots. Probably a linen light blue shirt. Have to find the right tie. Maybe an elephant tie pin. And acwhite pith helmet.

It's going to be an East African dry 38 Deg C tomorrow !!!

Heia Safari !

I'll report back on the lecture.
