Why 3031 powder reference for nitro express loads?
      #38799 - 06/10/05 01:39 PM

Was just going through my old, old issues of Cartridges of the World. Noticed that many of the old nitro express cartridges were listed with the " grains of cordite " and then a load utilizing 3031 powder, almost exclusively. What's the deal on that!? Later editions have eliminated any reference to 3031.

Could it have been that some bright-spark figured that cordite & 3031 had the same burn rate?

Thanks

That was the general consensus back in the 'early' days of the Nitro-express resurgence, ie the 'Jack Lott Era'. After a few pressure-spikes and unexplained blow-ups with that powder, and a stack of work by Graeme Wright and his mates on this side of the pond, and Ross Seyfried et al on your side, 3031 was abandoned in favour of larger charges of slower powder, ie 4831 or 2213. Wrighty has since presure-tested most of these loads, vindicating the choice for the slower stuff. Of course it may have been the filler-wads, necessary with the faster powder, or some other combination of factors, but 3031 is definitely out of favour for big-capacity NE cases today.

References to most powders were probably removed with the introduction of Reloader 15 which I think was designed specifically to replicate Cordite loads, with starting loads of Reloader 15 estimated via the rough formula of the number of grains of Cordite multiplied by 1.19.
