I currently own and have hunted with a .375 H&H and a .458win. I am now going to build a "tweener" rifle, for buffalo, brown bear, etc. on an FN Mauser action currently barrelled in .338. As this action will not tolerate long cases (i.e. 416 rem), i am looking at the short case options.

Right now, I am considering 416 taylor, 425 express and 404 Dakota. I am leaning tword the 404 Dakota.

Does anyone have any insight on this? I know there is not too much difference between them, but I am curious if anyone has any experience or opinions...thanks.

The .416 Taylor is such a marvellous round I have no hesitation in recommending it. No fuss, simple to reload, plenty of bullets to choose from these days. Just get a tapered-expander and neck-up all those .338 cases.

BTW, why not update your profile to show 'country'. Then we will know whether to recommend Woodleigh bullets or Northforks!

I thought the Taylor was build on a necked down 458 win case. Is that not correct?

I-too would go for a .416 Taylor. The easiest brass to use is .338 mag. brass, necking them up in one pass with the FL die button.
: .458 Brass could also be used, but necking down is harder sometimes, than necking up. With necking up, you won't have a thick-neck problem that will show itself, if you use, say, shortened 300 mag brass.(which is a possibility as well, especially if .338 brass is hard to find. In reality, any 2.5" or longer, belted magnum case can be used, if neck turned or reamed on those too thick for the neck area on the .416 chamber.
: For a bit more work, well worth it for an anomolous ctg.and if a bit of one-up-manship is desired, a .458 Alaskan is also a possibility. In this respect, a .416 Alaskan reamer could be used to make up a .416 Alsakan on the blown .348 case for a magnum bolt, 98 mauser. A small lathe is nice for turning down the .348 rims, into a slightly rebated-rim case with .458 Win Mag capacity + a few grs.
: Shown is the .450 Alaskan rimmed, for lever actions, and the .458 Alaskan for magnum bolt faces with rebated rim. The same reamer is used for both chambers. The .416 "Alaskan" reamer could be used to make the same case for .416 bullets. This also is a 2.1" ctg. that feeds very well and allows any bullet seating depth needed, up to 3.2"

How are the ballistics on 458 Alaskan?

As the capacity is 97gr. water, compared to the .458's 90gr., the ballistics should be pretty close + a few fps. I haven't pushed this rifle, as my back(and my mind) don't like much recoil these days, however I did load to 65gr. of Reloader#7 with 400gr. Barnes SP's for 2,380fps which was a moderate load. I assume this ctg. will do close to 2,500fps with 400gr.
: A nice soft load for the 520gr. cast bullets, printing with the 400gr. jacketed, was 55gr. Reloader#7 for $1,900fps even. Accuracy with the cast bullets was a 1/2" hle for 3 shots - regularly, with WW bullets and Moly-stick lube. The same load did 1,910fps with 420gr. from an RCBS mould, again, WW metal and Moly stick lube.
: At from 2,100fps to 2,400fps, the 400gr. shot into 1 hole, as well, with 3" vertical dispersion between 2,100fps and 2,400fps.
: The same 55gr. RE#7 puts 400gr. jacketed out at 2,042fps. along with 350 heavy jacketed Speers.
: 350gr. "XFB's" clock a bit more speed than the 400gr. jacketed with .032" jackets.
: My rifle has a Shilen barrel with rather shallow rifling. The fairly soft, oversize WW bullets are responsible for gripping this rifling, contrary to popular belief that they must be hard. Not true.

So's the .338, or visa/versa. It's just that .338's are easier to manipulate.

Can anyone elaborate on the .425 express? It always sounded like a very good round with not a lot of fokkowing any experience with it ou there?

I believe that it's a .300 win mag case necked to .423. From what I've read, it can get a 400gr bullet up to 2400 fsps generating over 5,000 ft lbs of energy.

I am hearing mixed reports on the ballistics for 416 taylor. Some put it 2400 fps and others at 2300 (all w/ 400gr). I am fairly fixated on breaking 5,000 ft lbs so, thsi makes a difference.

Do you know what it can do? would you suggest a lighter bullet?
