Is the CHAPUIS EXPRESS rifle a good brand?
      #387878 - 27/11/24 07:50 AM

Well I guess I am getting weak and wanting to knock one more thing off of my bucket list.
I was looking at a Chapuis double for around $3500 and was thinking of bidding.
I do not know much about this brand and wanted to know if this was a good deal.
Thanks
Nick

Well, there's a bit more to this than meets the eye, so to speak!

First up: condition is everything. Particularly bore condition. Most other things can be fixed, albeit for a price.

The heavier chamberings command a premium, from .450 up, but the .375H&H is useful. ...although some might question the rimless or belted cartridge as a sensible double rifle choice.

Ejectors are preferable for the hunting field, also commanding a higher price.

Having said all that, thirty-five hundred would be a good price for a nitro double in VG condition or better, with no issues.

...if you can get it for that!

Flatcrew/Nick,
George Caswell at Champlin is a big believer in Chapuis.
PLUS: I’ve never heard negative comments from actual users of these rifles.
Are you looking at a 9.3x74R? Those would be at that price point and ammo is easy to find.
I like the 9.3mm, it’s great for any North American game and (I read) most African game as well.

Looks like a good price. I'm guessing it's a 9.3x74R at that price.

Chapuis have been owned by various members. More talked about in the past. Mostly good reports. One member was not happy though. Not sure how that ended. All brands have all sorts of results. Chapuis is in the lower price range of double rifles brands

Do a search on these forums. Ask questions like you are doing from actual owners and users.

I've never owned one. Have visited their factory in France though.

I'm not a fan of the large fat beavertail forends on the Chapuis.

Good luck.

Nick,
I’ve owned several Chapuis double rifles through the years. I’ve never had a bad one, some shoot better than others but all of them shot good enough for a double. I had a 375 belted that would put both shots (left and right barrels) touching at 100 yards . With factory Hornady ammo !! (I wish I’d have kept that one). As others have said “look at the bores and over all condition of the gun” . And, as with any double, it’s got to fit you or it’s no good. They are very well made guns at a very reasonable price point.
Good luck ,
Robert
