calling in a moose
      #38772 - 05/10/05 11:16 PM

yesterday, working out in a cutblock I noticed a big bull moose way out on the other side of the block. He was heading across and had nearly left the block when I noticed him(I was working after all, not searching the horizon for game) I let out a couple grunts just to see what he would do. He stopped and looked over. I got down low and let a few more go, I am not really that good at it, but he started coming my way. I got into a safe spot and continued calling the big fellow.
I managed to get him well within 60 yards, he was not the biggest moose in the world, but respectable, and the first legal one I have seen this year. Unfortunately the season is closed right now and I am not allowed to hunt while at work. So, at this point I decided to show myself and tell the big lad I was just fooling with his head, he just glared at me with the breath from his nostrals(sp?) showing in the cold air. After a few moments he turned around and left me. But what good fun!!!!

Daughter Carol and I saw 2 bulls and 4 cows on Sunday. We were unable to get the bulls closer as the cows were slowly moving off. When we worked out way down to them, we were able to get the smaller bull, maybe 42" within 100yds, but we couldn't pack him out of that tangle bad back that I have, so didn't shoot him. It almost killed me getting back to the truck carrying my rifle. We do have a draw for a big bull, but the range was too far for her. Maybe on Friday when we go out again. Too bad she's writing mid-terms this week.
: Later in the Day, I called 4 does (1 huge one, maybe 220lbs.) within 40 yards of us, but no bucks were around as it's a bit early for them to be with the does (about a month from now - different story)

I have had to pass on several bulls over the years because it would be impossible to get them out from where I was. Still, getting skunked hunting is better than most other days.

Debone instead of quartering and it makes it manageable to pack out.

Exact centre of the Province.
; A bit of biology on Moose.
: Moose here call well from about the 18th Sept through to about October 15th.
: The rut is the last week of Sept and first week of October - every year, never fails - no matter what the weather is like, it is bilogically necessary that the 'rut' happens at that time - according to biologists. Every year, I hear guys saying, "Oh - the rut is late this year" - BULL Crap. You just have to be where the cows are and the bulls will be there. 18 month old bulls rarely come right in to a call, usually skirting the caller's area to check for larger bulls that might hurt them. Breeder bulls will generally come right in to the hunter.
: Cows that aren't bred during the 'rut' will come back into estrus for at least 2 months after the 'rut' every 28days, but if bred later than the first "rut", their calves generally won't survive the next winter due to being too small. Nature is hard on laggards. Cows usually have twin calves.

I know BC fairly well, having lived in Wa. State for about 15 years, so is there a town nearby you? How do you get in bush plane?

Thanks,
Colorado

I live in the exact centre of the Province. The city is Prince George. This past season, I had to drive 3/4 to 1 hour to get to the area of my Daughter's Bull draw, but have hunted them roughly 20 min from home(truck), in a different area. I have also hunted within 10 min of home for black bear with a bow as we've more than our share of those - to chasing them out of the car port in the fall. This last fall, we had a sow with 2 cubs hanging around the street on this end of the crescent. Soon, the old cow and last spring's calf will be trimming our flowering dogwoods in the front yard. They look, and I guess taste just like red-willow to them.

OK I know were your at now. I have a lot of friends who fly the trench and highway and use CYXS (PG) as a lay over and fueling stop.

Nice area. Are winters tough?
