What's the best lever?

What's the best opening "lever", the extremely common top lever, under lever, or the side lever? And why?

If the lever were on the left side, for a right handed shooter to use his/her thumb, it might be better than the top lever, otherwise the top lever gets the nod, imho.

I will simply add that IMHO the most elegant shotguns ever built were top-lever hammer. Add island locks and ejectors, and you have the absolute pinnacle to my taste.
The fact that almost all such guns have James Purdey on the locks is unfortunate: unless in complete road-kill condition I will never be able to afford one!

For double rifles, top-lever hammerless is clearly the best. Fastest to operate on dangerous game, and although arguably not as strong as a Jones underlever, the screw-grip version of Scott's spindle with Purdey under-bolts is widely acknowledged as plenty strong enough!

So yeah, top-lever for sure.

Arguably the strongest action by far for a double - the Bradshaw.
The underlever & the under dog in this discussion & I must say I really like it a lot.

It would be interesting to see speed wise which would be fastest, but I would suspect that would basically come down to familiarity.
My Merkel is no where near this class & still quite stiff.
