Gorgeous this time of year in the Colorado mountains. Tucker and I took a short walk last night, moved two grouse, the first of which was in the canopy before I got a shot off, the second one I connected on.

Always fun, taking the gun and dog for a walk.

thats an ideal reference for making a hunting painting, maybe turning the grouse to the side so its better to see.

Lovely painting. I'd love paintings of my dogs, past and present.

That's a good mixed bag. One hare, two pheasant, one woodcock, one pigeon or partridge (?), two grouse.
That would be a good day out and a nice bag at the end of the day.

That's the biggest woodcock I've ever seen, BTW.
Used to shoot them in the cedar (semi)swamps back in Southern Ontario.
The eat just fine.

The Eurasian variety is much larger than ours here in North America, up to a 26" wing span

WOW - no wonder they are or were so popular for shooting in England.
Our snipe, which look so similar to woodcock, are even smaller.
I put 27 Snipe (1 shot with 2ounces of 8 1/2's) breasts on a patter in our large microwave (long time ago) setting the timer for 5 minutes.
When the bell went off, I took them out, 27 small 1" diameter black stones. Too long in the NUKE I think?
The snipe were all on a little hump of black mud sticking out of the lake, near shore. The pattern covered the whole mud lump from side to side.
2 or maybe 3 birds flew away, unscathed. They must have been just under the top on the other side.
