Nice. I think Bailey should adopt the design for a case label. Very Texan.

Pity I never ended up with Bailey's first .23 Hornet double rifle. The Police messed me around with the import certificate. Three attempts and ended up forgetting to reapply. Excellent price. After looking it over, I possibly intended to pay a higher price. But Mike ended up selling it to a good home for five times the price I was offered. It even went to Africa. My intention had been to do a "small guys" safari with it. I still dream of a .22 Hornet double rifles.

That's very cool. Thanks for posting.

I need some special .450 No.2 NE and .404 Jeffery Kynoch ammo boxes.

Lots of ideas.

The miser in me, says, a design not ripped each use.

John:
Some confusion is apparent.

Quote:

I'm not sure if my Jeffery was Orr retailed.

The Jeffery .400 double in my current employ was not retailed by P.Orr & Sons. The Jeffery sales ledger from the pre-WWII period no longer exists, so we will never know who received the guns from Jeffery at that time. Presumably firms like Manton's, and yes, perhaps even Peter Orr, took delivery of some in India, but many would have been delivered to individual customers at their London premises.

My P. Orr & Son retailed gun is a 12-bore nitro paradox made by G. & S. Holloway.

My assumption that you had a Peter Orr retailed gun was based on your earlier post:
Quote:

And a Westley Richards 1879 era label.
The gun was built as a 10 bore in 1879, for WC Wood Esq. on behalf of P. Orr & Sons, Madras, India.

And that Jeffery trade label I posted a pic of, is a gold-embossed leather label. Not the kind of thing I was expecting anyone to want to print a paper version of!

To get back on track, here is the Watson & Hancock repro trade label I bought a decade or two back, with the intention of framing it for the wall of the den.

Unfortunately, the walls of my man-cave are covered in shelving and have no room for such frivolous ornamentation!

Even sadder, most of the trade labels in vintage gun-cases I have acquired over the years look like this:

Here's another nice gold-embossed leather one from an oak and canvas case with leather trim, that I acquired a while back to house my Army & Navy .577 Double Express. Fortunately still in good nick. Apologies for the lousy photo, the old leather was a bit shiny!

Nowhere near as elaborate as the repro A&N leather label on Henry Krank's site, but at least its original!

BTW where did everybody go?

Might have one in the archive we did for Gebruder Merkel a few years ago, will check.

Meanwhile, on the subject of Walter Locke & Co, here's an image I ripped from a UK Gun Trader website a while back. Very unusual design, seemingly with a pocket included. Perhaps for owner's details, ...or gun details, ...or loading info, ...or game licence, ...or....?

Apologies for the low res image, had to blow it up a lot!

Never seen one anything like this in the flesh!

Good posts Marrskai. Keeping the thread going.

I'm thinking I need a Spanish Azhur label for my detachable sidelock side by side shotgun. Details for it might be scarcer than hensteeth. Azhur or azure means blue so that might form some sort of image idea? A "blue star"?

I don't have many cases. Two or three modern "car cases". A couple old decrepit "car cases". Not sure any make my grade for a "car case" labelled for a particular gun. My gun safe is chcablock full. No car case will fit in there.

If course I have modern full length modern gun cases.

One decrepit cloth covered case came with and houses my Cogswell & Harrison .500 Exp I'll have to remember whether it has a label. I don't think so So that's one label project for me.

My first modern "car case" I think of belonging with my Azhur. It's a dimpled synthetic covered case. My Jeffery .450 often used that case but I doubt I'd use it for a labelled case for a 120 year old Jeffery.

I do have one decrepit rather covered case, simply purchased because it was there and cheap. Not sure how it fits in.

I have a modern Mauser fitted case for one of my Mauser M03s, with space frbtwo barrels and scopes. That must get a bespoke Mauser label. I think that famous Mauser rifles image might fit the bill. That case could house the synthetic stocked action or the walnut stocked action. One day the latter will get a custom classic walnut stock,

A "full length" rifle case for my Grandfather's Mauser 22 RF might be cool suitably labbelled. And one for my Whitworth Mauser 375. Or PH customised M98 .30-06.

I do have one Aussie Fortress brand "silver" car case. It's strong and useful for the heavy Jeffery .450.

I had ideas of a custom Fortress ordered case for my Mauser M03 system two actioned stocks, four barrels, two bolts, several bolt heads, several magazines four or more scopes Might need two layers.

Generally I use cases as needed, swapping them for the guns as needed A tool kit approach. But the special ones could get a dedicated case The "system" guns could utilise a dedicated case, keeping everything together. My Mauser M03 two rifles and bits, and my Tikka/Valmet u/o is the second. Keeping bits together One doesn't have to look for misplaced bits. A dedicated case could get a special car case label.

Having said earlier that I wouldn't expect anyone to print a paper version of a gold-embossed leather trade label,
here's one I did for my cased .400J double long before acquiring the Jeffery "new old-stock" leather label already posted.
It was made by printing in B/W onto gold card.

And while on the subject of vintage leather labels, here's one from the oak and leather case for my Wilkes-made Manton .470NE double.
Quite different from any of the commercially available reproductions on offer today.

...and as John said, keep 'em coming, gentlemen!

I have 3 Custom Conversion Double Rifles built by the late Bob Hynden. Bob was very prolific posting here on this and other forums. He had over 730 posts as Birdhunter50 over 9 years.
Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly in 2017.

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/dosearch....&fromprof=1

All 3 of my Double Rifles are cased, but Bob never had a letterhead or logo or label to document his work. Now he has one.

I attended a CHASA - Conservation Hunters Alliance of SA, Annual dinner Friday evening.mcAt the National Wine Centre.

One of the auction items was a Guardian double gun case. Fitted compartments. I don't know what size shotgun it's designed for.
Treasonable colouring, leather edged, and beige. I think green felt inside.

I think the auction priced seemed a very reasonable $600. I have to see what they retail at. Guardian two level double gun case. I should have bid.

BuT I double have a matched pair, even close, of a couple of double guns. That case deserves a label for each side.

A case like this. Possibly all leather covered?

Guardian Heritage Regent Double Shotgun Case

https://www.uttings.co.uk/p128053-guardian-heritage-regent-double-shotgun-case-hh324csal-db/

Similar inside to this single gun case, but the lid forms a second gun case compartment.

https://images.uttings.co.uk/images/prod...jc3My4wLjAuMA..

$600 would have been a good price.

Ok, back to case labels...

Buckstix: that Birdhunter label is a wonderful tribute to Bob, marvelous stuff! He and I corresponded a lot during his first DR build.
He would be chuffed!

Meanwhile, here's another ripper trade label, a rare one from a gunmaker/retailer operating in Bombay during the Raj:

Had a serious chuckle at their telegram address: Banduk wala!

Absolutely love this stuff!

Got a bunch more, but will stick to trade labels for guns I actually have examples of from now on.

Barry: Looked for a Merkel repro but my memory was at fault. It was a Simson, done for a mate who bought a mid-grade 12-bore off me at the time.

The first one pictured is THAT first double rifle that Bob built. (that I now own) The second one pictured was Bob's personal 3" 20 bore double. (that I now own) And, the 3rd one is a 3" 577 bpe that he custom built for the seller from whom I just purchased it. Bob wrote about that 3" 577 bpe on several forums.

That was a wonderful tribute to Birdhunter from you Buckstix - I thought it was pretty neat & rather fitting as well!

All good Marrakai, one of our mates over in the old countries somewhere will find an old one & most probably post it here just to prove that Merkel had something better than what they put up like their logo on their web site. A work in progress for me T'is all.
Very much appreciate you looking for me!

Too easy.
I remembered trying to find a hi-res image of the Merkel trademark, the armourer at his anvil
hammering a billet of steel into a sword blade, supposedly inscribed "Suhl seit 1535", but gave up in the end.

John: none of the trade label images I post will be suitable for printing as-is.
I toss them up on my own domain and would quickly exceed the storage limit if they were print quality.
They are intended to show content and layout, including fonts, crests etc,
so the enthusiast can put together a good quality repro using their own software.
If you don't need curved text, Microsoft Word will do the job just fine.

Here's a nice one from a Dougall case.
I don't actually have a Dougall but acquired a nicely restored 12-bore SxS hammer-gun built on the Dougall Lock-Fast patent action by John Wilkes,
who apprenticed to J.D.Dougall in his youth. The gun bears the name of Irwin Wallas of Wigton & Carlisle on the locks,
and although not Scottish, you could throw a stone northwards from their foundry and hit a scotsman!

Aye, 'tis indeed.

And so is the Whistler label you posted, casper. Couldn't see it first time round.
Its got me wondering if that Walter Locke paper label I posted earlier with the apparent pocket is simply missing an embossed maker's name, inserted from behind.

Here's another uncommon label for a gun in my custody, the shortened and re-regulated "double slugger" made from a William Griffiths boxlock that was lopped by 5 inches following damage to the muzzles.

Apologies for the poor quality, had to crop it from a web-image of a cased gun.

Here's another nice leather example cropped from a web-image of a cased gun:

Years ago I tried to buy an oak and leather case with an early Kavanagh paper label in good nick, offered for private sale in the UK, but the lady refused to export.
I begged, pleaded, offered double, but she wouldn't budge. Needed it for my Kavanagh 12-bore ULH howdah rifle.

Couple more leather ones:

Lovely Alexander Henry example, gold embossed on red leather.

Next one is not the best pic, again, had to crop it from a web-image of a cased gun. Would suit my little plain-engraved 12-bore boxlock by that maker.

Charles Hellis made much of his cartridge loading as mentioned on the case label.
A photo of his premises reproduced in one of Boothroyd's books shows same emblazoned across the shop-front window!
