Classic Rifles Safari Mark II

You want to go on safari and take a classic rifle or rifles and cartridge chamberings. Relive the golden era of African safari. Or the days of darkest unemployed Africa. The days of the Great Ivory Hunters perhaps.

This is an aspirational thread.

What rifles, cartridges would you take to hunt what with?

Enjoy.

A person wants to hunt Africa with classic or vintage rifles. Simple. No "dreams" or "novels" required,

DD for example wants to hunt using Martini Henry or similar styled rifles. Why not.

I've hunted Africa with my .450 No.2 Nitro Express W.J. Jeffery. Elephant, warthog, and maybe other beasts. I'd like to again, including cape buffalo.

My second safari was with a Whitworth Mauser 98 .375 H & H Magnum. Cape Buffalo and a variety of plains game. The Mauser 98 and .375 H & H Magnum is both a vintage classic and a modern classic.

My first safari was a Mauser 98 in .30-06. The .30-06 is a great American classic.

The future? I'd like to hunt with my 1876 Westley Richards 10-bore double rifle. Cape Buffalo. Maybe elephant. Other assorted game. The 10-bore harks back to early days of African hunting and still exploration.

I've mentioned the .318 WR numerous times.

The 7x57, 6.5x54 M-S, .300 H&H Magnum are other examples which would be great to take.

If your interest is the latest and modern, it's not classic. Scroll on.

I would take a 416 Rigby in a magnum Mauser action or a worked P14/M17 action stocked by Gordon Cussins in Tasmania. This is a classic calibre and about my recoil tolerance and works on everything from Rabbits to Elephant.

The second rifle would be a 358/338RUM on a P14/M17 action. Not a classic callibre but a classic rifle, stocked by Gordon Cussins. Works on everything from rabbit to, in some countries, Elephant. To be classic in calibre I would make that a 350 Rigby but loaded to potential. In some countries they have a minimum power level for El not min calibre and my 358/338RUM makes the power level.

For the pot it would probably be a 22 Hornet on a 303 Action. Why, well classic calibre and classis action and they shoot.

Why the P14/M17 action. Yes, it is big and heavy but it works flawlessly, is reliable and can take just about any round made for hunting. I like the ergonomics of the action.

Unfortunately, Gordon is in semi-retirement and only doing chosen stocks.

My September 1936 Model 70 Winch. .30 Gov. 06 for plains game, multiple Antelope species including Kudu, Sable and Eland.
Perhaps with my new (hopefully) Umarex Hammer in .50.
