How does your "Paradox" style shotgun pattern shot?
      #386817 - 16/09/24 02:46 AM

The Holland & Holland Paradox and Westley Richards Explora guns were shotguns, smooth bore guns with the muzzles rifled. Some.guns had full length "invisible" rifling, very light rifling and other variations.

These guns were designed to shoot both shot and ball from the same barrels. Ball here might mean true ball, cone or other projectile as opposed to shot. Paradox and Explora guns were used for hunting a mixed bag, small game, birds with shot. The "ball" for medium game, and even dangerous big game. Hunting birds, rabbits, but possibly deer or a boar, a paradox might be worth carrying. Meet up with a bear, tiger, gaur, it might be a gun to save yourself with.

Normally firing shot from a rifled barrel creates bad or donut shot patterns. The "paradox" design was supposed to allow decent shot patterns.

MY QUESTION TO ANYONE WHO USES A PARADOX OR EXPLORA OR SIMILAR.

HOW DOES SHOT PATTERN IN YOUR GUN? WELL, PATCHY PATTERN, DONUT? PLEASE SUPPLY DETAILS, GUN TYPE, RIFLING TYPE, SHOT SIZE etc.

John,

I have a Cogsworth & Harrison Cosmos paradox that I have used for quail hunting. While I have never patterned this gun, it is an excellent quail gun. I don't believe that the small amoung of rifling in the choke impacts the shot pattern. I have killed birds fairly close (15 yds) with the right barrel and at fairly long range (35+ yds) with my left barrel. The gun delivers when I do my job of leading the birds. I attributed my missed shots to that guy pointing the gun (me).

That is good news. Small bird at 35 yes says the pattern must not be too bad/holie/patchy.
That is something I have wondered about as well.

Thanks RB.

I also assume "paradox" guns have open chokes. Cylinder, no actual choking except for the rifling?

That brings up another question.

Does the rifling in a muzzle rifled bore, protrude into the bore? Or cut into the existing barrel bore? i.e. lands protrude into the bore OR rifling cut into the existing barrel?

That is a cracking fine gun; remarkably similar to mine, but mine's not in nearly as nice condition, nor is it cased, much less with accessories. However, mechanically mine is sound and the bores are intact, making it a shooter.

I'm more than a little interested to see the results of your shooting: mine regulated with round balls, and grouped 4-5" at 50; shot patterns not worth a damn; had a few sample fosberry bullets, but could not get them anywhere close to regulating; perhaps I need to get a mould and play some more with those, as you are clearly having some success with them, and with a matching mould, clearly the gun was made to use such bullets.

Fine work, with a fine gun!

Mine I regard as a cheap and cheerful double rifle - spent shotshell cases instead of Bertram's wares, and cast scrap lead rather than Woodleighs - and it's a hoot to shoot that way; but shot patterns from mine are rubbish.

Thanks "cadet" for your reply on your experience.

My Cogwell & Harrison is a regualr choked gun that has rifling cut into the choke. It you look down the barrel from the breech, it looks like a regular shotgun but from the front, the rifled choke is visible. Looking at the gun, you would think it is a regular shotgun but realize it has rifle sights.

Ken Owen regulated my Cogwell for the previous owner. Ken is a double rifle specialist. He is also a very nice guy.
