reloading 280 Ross

talk with someone who bought a suhl made mauser in 280 ross for the swedish african/india hunter bengt berg. he got some old kynoch ammo for a start. told him it could not be so hard to reload for this rifle but it seems the case is different.is there any new brass available for the 280 ross is there a cases that can be resized?

Hi Lancaster.
I have a Ross M1910 that I shoot regularly. I have purchased resized brass that I believe originally started life as 375 Ruger brass. If memory serves me correctly, resizing is a several step process.
I make my own brass from 300 Win Mag cases. I simply run them through the 280 FL sizing die and trim to length. Even thou the 300 Win Mag is belted, The cartridges feed and chamber without issue. I check all by brass with a sharp scribe inside the case and I haven't had any issues with case separation.
I had found others online who do the same thing without issue. Use your own judgement.
I love the history of the 280 Ross cartridge. I'm able to shoot very accurate open sight groups that chrono 145 grain bullets at just over 3000 fps. Not bad for a cartridge designed in 1905!

Years ago I ordered by Horneber 280 Ross cases for a friend in Paris who owned some original Ross rifles. Horneber delivered it to me after about 2 years of waiting.

I remember seeing 280 something on a list put out by Bertram Brass/bullets. Might be worth sending Bertram and email asking if they make 280Ross cases.

The 280 Ross brass that I had for my commercial Ross 1910 was resized brass from Buffalo Arms. I located some 0.287" bullets which worked well. I sold that rig several years ago.

The one thing about using reworked brass is that it needs to be annealed (even if the supplier claims it is annealed). I lost a large % of my 280 brass because I didn't anneal it so the remaining brass was annealed and the problem went away.

It was Marrakai's post that led me down the path of using 300 Win Mag brass. The form easily and function perfectly in my M1910.
My rifle shoots excellent groups with standard (.284) 145 gr. 7mm bullet s using the factory Porter peep sight. I have not had a chance to take the Ross deer hunting yet but I'm anxious to see how she performs on PA whitetail deer.

Thanks, 93x64. I'm getting to the point where I have too many vintage bolt actions and not enough time to use them. I've decided that this year's rifles will be my Remington-Lee 1899 sporter in 30-40 Krag and my 1905 Mannlicher in 9x56mm. I still have time that I might be able to add the Ross into the lineup.
