Nice rilel. Excellent photos.

I like the idea of including a large game image of the history of the rifle. A male and female cape buffalo.

I'll have to get some large game photo images of my rifle printed, mounted on card.

casper50, Very nice, you must be proud!
A question, concerning the pic of the bull, do you think the hole just below the eyes of the bull, is a bullet hole?

I shared an edited version of the first image as the banner image on the FB NitroExpressGroup. Jason van Arde believes the rifle and the bull buffalo were hunted with him.ive invited him to come over and share. I think he is a member on NE already. Otherwise I will repost his photos and comments. I'll repost his images anyway. But it would be great for Jason to comment here.

I think that must be a bullet hole.
What a wonderfully preserved rifle.

This is what's written on the back of the photo of the bull

"Shot with .500 E. M. Reilly. 1st shot hit buffalo just above his nose (as he charged at 25 yards).
2nd shot hit below the brain but went through and broke his neck at 10 yards.
Ended up 4 yards from us dead.
Before the above I had shot this buffalo at 25 yards in the lung but, too high. He then went behind a bush and sat down. After 5 minutes he jumped up and charged straight at us.
Shot 100 miles south of the bottom (south) of Kruger National Park South Africa. 2006.

There are two used bullets in the case as well. I believe removed from this bull.

Casper,

That is a wonderful rifle with a great story. The photo with story on back is excellent. Were the two bullets hard cast or patched (if you can tell)?

Thanks for sharing.

They were jacketed. I won't be shooting any jacketed bullets in it. Old steel and all that.

Casper,

Thanks. i agree, it is best not to shoot jacketed bullets in old black powder rifles.

I asked about the bullet because I had read an article about talikng a .500 black powder express to hunt buffalo. The author shot the buffalo several times and later said that he felt that the .500 BPE was too iffy for buffalo. I believe that he was using paper patched soft lead bullets. I thought that a hard cast lead bullet would habve been a better choice.

Jason van Arde said the bullets used on the cape buffalo were 440 gr Woodleigh SPs. Which are jacketed and designed for this cartridge. I'd be using that if I hunted buffalo with it.

I've got a .500 BPE of some description. If appropriate I'll try that bullet one day if thinking about buffalo. And lead for medium game. The .500 BPs were medium game titles before Nitro Express and cordite arrived.

John this is a steel barreled rifle but, this is softer than modern steel, should jacketed bullets be used? I don't wish to destroy the rifling.

Your decision, yes or no I'm not an expert on the wisdom.

For my rifle unless enough very knowledgeable people say NO, I'd try them. For buffalo. For medium game maybe lead.

It's your decision. But your rifle probably has already shot wooodleigh jacketed bullets, Maybe Geoff McDonald can advise.

Bullets cast from the old WW with the clamping clips can be hardened to anywhere from 25 to 34 brinel by soaking in a hot oven that is set 10F below bullet sagging temp, then quenched in water. If sized and lubed immediately they will harden to between 30 and 34 brinel but will not be brittle like linotype which is only 21 brinel.
The reason for sizing and.lubing immediately, is that the bullets "take" 12 hours to harden. If they are allowed to harden before lube and sizing, sizing them will actually soften them again. They must be sized immediately after quenching.
Hardened lead bullets will pen like FMJs and can be driven to 3,000fps if the lube used is up to it.
Shotgun shot can also be cast into bullets and can be hardened somewhat as it, like the ww's, contains trace arsenic which is necessary for the antimony alloy to be hardennable.

John it's fired full jacket before. The fired bullet that came from that bull is in the case and it is a jacketed Woodleigh. 440 grain Woodleighs is what I was told he shot in it. I'm never going to shoot buff so I will play it safe and use cast only. Pity as I have 3 or 4 boxes of Woodleighs sitting on the shelf with nothing to use them for.

I used to own a replica 50/95. Pretty heavy for a lever gun.

Regarding the shooting of jacketed bullets in these old rifles, I believe the Woodleigh 440-grainers ( and the 650gr .577s) have relatively thin jackets being designed for black powder barrels, and are marked B.P. on the box.
I have absolutely no hesitation in shooting them in my BP doubles.
ie .500/.450 Tolley; .577/.500 No.2 Rodda; 20-bore/.577 Alex Henry; .577 x 2 3/4 Army & Navy.

...but erring on the side of caution will never be criticized here!
