Brevex #17 joins the collection - Champlin Arms 416 Rigby

I've been fortunate to add another Brevex. And, in my favorite caliber. This is my first Champlin Arms rifle. I've emailed George Caswell asking for History about its build. It was just purchased at auction yesterday. When I get the rifle in hand I'll post details and additional pictures. BTW, if you have a Brevex you care to sell, please PM me. I'd like to get to 20.

Well done Buckstix. That is a very nice understated rifle, just how I like them. Perfect grain flow through the wrist as well.

Well, I finally received the rifle in hand. Here are some additional details. I am very impressed with the overall quality of the work. LOP is 13-5/8" and it tips the scale at 11 pounds 12 ounces with the scope. That may seem a little heavy' but at that weight it really absorbs the recoil. I'm still waiting to hear from George Caswell of Champlin Arms to find the History of this rifle's build. I assume the was built in the 70s, a time when Maurice Ottmar worked for George as his stock maker. The overall quality, and checkering pattern, attests to Ottmar's style, such as the checkered saddle behind the tang.

as always, your comments are welcome,

Stock work & checkering is faultless - well to my eyes anyway!
The timber has a wonderful grain as well.
Will certainly be a treasured piece Buckstix!
Is the short Extractor the 'giveaway' for the Beverex action?

The short extractor is not the only feature. Most Brevex actions have a 45 degree slant at the bottom front of the triggerguard - like this one that I just added to the collection. Both those with the 45 degree slant, and those with the rounded bottom front, like shown below, have all the other features that I circled.

Those are the things to look for .... including the "purple" look to the receiver, which comes from the hot blue on the high nickel content of the Brevex receivers.

I had to use photo-shop to lighten the left side to see the gas vent hole on the left front of the action - which is typical on the Brevex. The Brevex actions are the longest magnum actions made. They are about 5/16" longer than the Magnum Mauser action.

Another gorgeous rifle buckstix! Truly gorgeous and useful too!

Of the 17 you have now, do you have a favorite?

You might also find the odd M17 with a short extractor. It will be from a Ruger as the are a copy of the M17 extractor.

The 'purple' I quite like. I hade one of my M17 a 358RUM cerakoted in Midnight Purple and it looks like a deep English blue in the sun.

I think you have done well with that acquisition.

The 505 Gibbs is my favorite ... followed by the 475 A&M ... both have African History.

You sir, have excellent taste in rifles and a keen eye for collecting them. I can see why like those two in particular, but I must say that each of the 17 has it's own unique charm. Good luck in your hunt for your next Brevex Mauser and as always, I look forward to seeing what you find.

Thanks for sharing!

This thread is turning out to be the best source reference for Brevex Magnum Mausers on the entire internet!

Well done buckstix!

Thank you ... I'm now looking to acquire number 18 to add to my collection. If you know of any for sale, please let me know.
