What kind of vel. are you getting with the 3031 load and the 540gr. bullet?

CAREFUL: Be aware that IMR 3031 was pretty popular back in the 1970’s & 1980’s for Nitro Express loads as it roughly duplicates the burn rate of Cordite. Elmer Keith, Ray Marriage, and other double rifle enthusiasts back in that day used it.
That said, it fell out of favor because it “can” be pretty erratic in Nitro Express size cartridges and some few double rifles were wrecked……there are better more modern powders that are not as problematic.
- yes, I am aware that Ken Owen and JJ Perodeau do recommend using it in Full Nitro Express duplicating loads.

Yours looks to be a very early (circa 1870 ish) BP Express so use care.

Just my 2¢ worth.

I usually use 4198 but when I googled a load for .577 BPE that popped up. I might switch back to 4198.

Mike,
4198 would be the realistic choice for NfB (with backer rod or Dacron filler). 40-44% of the original Black Powder weight to start, and bullet weights equivalent in weight to original loads.
Yes, period NfB Cordite loads “usually” regulated with bullets somewhat heavier than the ones used in the Black Powder loadings.

Have fun with the old girl!

One other thought:
You mention that the rifle is currently chambered for the .577 3” cartridge.
There is a distinct possibility that it was originally chambered for one of the older & shorter versions of .577’s (Snider, 2 1/4”, 2 1/2”, 2 3/4”j and due to ammunition obsolescence and availability had a .577 3” re chamber job to keep it shooting.
Yes, it “should have” been re proofed but if the job was not done in England then likely no re proof marks.
Just more 2¢ worth.
