Carl Bock two-barrel set cape gun
      #386102 - 30/07/24 12:32 PM

I was very fortunate this weekend to find this very well-preserved Carl Bock Frankfurt-marked two-barrel matching set cape gun
9.3x72R x16ga and shotgun barrels in 16 x 16
Any help determining the age or other interesting information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, RJ

Texan72,

That is a very nice looking two barrel, cased gun set. As discussed recently on this Forum, the 9.3x72 is an excellent cartridge and of course, the 16 ga is good for ducks to upland birds. Ammunition for both teh 9.3x72 and 16 ga are reasonably available. The 9.3x72 is very easy to reload.

I am interested in what is forund abolut Carl Bock. I have seen one other gun marked Cark Bock but could not find any more about that firm. I wonder if the Carl Bock firm is related to the well known Otto Bock firm which was really a retailer.

Carl Bock opened his gunshop in Frankfurt on Main in 1897. He died in 1945. Changing addresses were Schaefergasse 44, Berliner Str. 28 and Stiftstr. 21.
This combination was first proofed in Suhl between 1893 and 191I as the bore/land diameter of the rifle barrel is still marked with the old gauge number 129.43. It was Nitro reproofed (I = Instandsetzung = repair) by the Suhl proofhouse (“pick and sole” shield) in 1043 = October 1943. At that time the cartridge designations 9,3/72 and 16/65 (16 2 ˝”) were added.
The base for a Greifelt slide-on mount was probably added in the 1920s. The mount top and the Hensoldt Ziel-Dialyt scope from the 1930s don’t really fit the base. See the rear locking lever hanging out in the air behind the base.

Before someone asks: What is a Greifelt scope mount? It was a 1920s slide-on mount with interlocking teeth, like a rack, on base and locking element. This arrangement precluded any lengthwise movement of rings to base, while allowing removal after unlocking. Obsolete since at least WW2. So don’t ask me where to find fitting rings. Here is the drawing from the Waffenlexokon by Lampel & Mahrholdt:

In the 1930s Stoeger imported such mount parts and sold them as “their own”. Their ad from the 1939 Shooter’s Bible:

My Johann Springer double rifle was rebarreled by Carl Bock and perfectly fit.

I'd love this gun with just the 16-bore double barrel shotgun set of barrels.

The combination "cape gun" set with 9.3x72R barrel is an extra special addition. For close medium game hunting.

That is all the gun I need these days. Whitetail deer and grouse. That's it.

I was thinking the same thing, Daryl. Hopefully, it shoots like I think it will and will be a fine North Texas hunting rig for a while, but for whitetail,Feral hogs, and quail..
