1916 256 Newton Coming My Way
      #385923 - 22/07/24 04:10 AM

Hello All
Last week, I saw an ad posted on another forum for a Winchester 1887 10-gauge shotgun for sale. I have been considering owning an antique BPC shotgun for some time. I contacted the seller and we came to an agreement on the price. During our phone conversation, he mentioned that he is helping his cousin sell firearms from a family estate.
I asked him about what other firearms they were going to be selling. He mentioned to me that there was a 1916 256 Newton rifle was in the collection.
He forwarded pics to me and I immediately knew that I needed to purchase the rifle instead. I asked if I could back out of the Winchester deal and move ahead with the Newton. I love old shotguns, but I have a soft spot in my heart for vintage bolt action hunting rifles.
This Newton has upgrades from the factory which include a bolt shroud aperture and checkered steel buttplate. It also has line engraving on the receiver and bolt along with presentation engraving on the floor plate dated 1917. It also is equipped with a vintage (1960's Leupold Classic 4x scope.)
I hope to receive the rifle within the next couple weeks. I was able to track down an old set of RCBS dies and I ordered some new 270 brass. I have a good supply of 6.5 mm bullets to play around with.
I'll post more pics once I have the rifle in hand. For now, I included a picture of the engraved floor plate.

It is an original Newton bolt action rifle.

Great piece of history you have there fjrdoc!
You'll have to show us more on this marvellous rifle you have there & a bit more on Newton himself if you can. I believe he was a 'hotrodder' like Wilhelm Brenneke, a case of parallel development?

Good find. Wasn't the .256 Neuton a slightly shortened '06 or .270 case?

Daryl,

You are correct. The 256 Newton is a 30/06 necked down to take a 6.5mm bullet and is slightly shorten (2mm). Newton first imported 6.5mm barreled Mausers and chambered them for his 256 Newton cartridge that he designed. When the war in Europe broke out, he could not get Mauser rifles so he developed his own rifle. While he was developing his rifle (1st model or 1916 Newton), he rebarreled/restocked a few Springfields in 256 Newton. (I had &sold a 256 Newton Springfield marked NAC).

However, as the European war progressed, he could not get ammunition and that was what killed the Newton Arms Co (NAC). He made about 4000 rifles.

At the same time, Newton also developed the 30 Newton and 35 Newton These are the same basic case, just different bullets. That is the same case that Ruger used for its 375 Ruger. Ruger won't admit it but a 375 Ruger can be necked doiwn to either 30 Newton or 35 Newton. The 30 Newton has semilar ballastics to the later 30 Win Mag.

The Newton has a neat takedown system in that the magazine can drop down and then unscrew the bold retaining the action from the stock. ll have double set triggers. and some have a bolt tang sight.
Barrels look worn because the rifling is semi-eliptical.

I have collected and sold a number of 256 and 30 Newtons. They are great guns that were impcted by WWI. Jamison mad a run of 256 and 30 Newton brass and I was able to get some then.

Thanks RB. I was aware the .30 and .35 Neuton ctgs. had a .500" base dia. but not that Ruger simply used the Neuton case. Did Ruger use the same shoulder angle as well?

I can't answer that question Lancaster. I don't own a Springfield but I do own Mausers. The Newton has a claw extractor like the Mauser but it has a multi-lug bolt. This article has some additional info on the rifles.

Lancaster, that is the 1916 (1st) odel Newton similar to the one that fjrdoc bought.

The design was likely influenced by Mauser and, as fjrdoc says, it is a multilug action. It is suppsoedly a very strong action.

This 1916 rifle is a very nice acton rifle.

There is a 2nd model aka Buffalo Newton which isn't as nice looking. The Buffalo Newton has a dogleg bolt handle but also a neat DST. The set trigger is forward and backwards so that it is pushed to set and the firing trigger is more conveniently located (for me).

The originals had either barrel or bolt sights. Later people D&T for scope or Redfield action sight. The original model also came in 30/06.

Picked up the rifle this week. I'm very happy with my purchase. I loaded up a couple ladders of 129gr spire points and IMR4350 and H4831. I'm going to try and get to the range tomorrow. Took a bunch of pics to share with you all.

Made it to the range today with the Newton. The old girl liked 50.5 grains of H4831SC and my Hornady 129 gr spire points. This is a 50 yard group that clocked at 2837 fps with a standard deviation of .95

fjrdoc,

Those are very nice pictures and great accuracy. I need to try that load.

If you drop the mqgazine, you can use the magazine to unscrew the barreled action from the stock. That is a neat design by Charles Newton.

Not bad at all fjrdoc!
Great to hear that you got the old girl going - will make a great dear rifle to boot!
Rather cool having one of these on the shooting line, far better than the latest offerings, they have no charisma!

These old hunting rifles speak to me. I'm starting to develop quite a nice collection. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Being able to take them out into the woods and use them makes me happy.

I went to the range yesterday with my son and his friend. I took the Newton along with a ladder of IMR4064 as well as loads of the H4381SC.
The 4064 shot respectable groups but the H4831SC load is a tack driver! My son's friend (30 years-old) shot 3 shots into one ragged hole.
I think it was an eye-opening experience for him.

What this Forum is all about, getting all the older / so called obsolescent cartridges going again - & going perhaps even better than ever!
Well done fjrdoc, now we have loading data for the 25 Newton onboard!

fjrdoc, that is one fine looking old rifle and it shoots as good as it looks. Well done on finding it.
