Questions
      #385790 - 15/07/24 06:11 PM

So I've always been curious about getting into RC planes. The only thing that's held me back is that they're foam and I'm not sure how fragile they are. The last thing I want is to drop like 200 and it breaks. I am looking into Dynam Primo Trainer https://www.dynamrc.com/products/primo-trainer-red-dy8971rd and it looks very solid. What do you guys do to repair them? How do you deal with all the crashing and is there other options other than foam for a beginner?

These electric planes are quite robust due to their light weight. $200.00 is less than I spent on my alcohol burning motors alone.
Those foamies are more resistant to crashing than the balsa planes I started with, that cost much more than these little electric, easy to fly planes.

Interesting thread on a firearms forum.

Decades ago when I had a more stressful job I purchased a ME109 model remote controlled plane. It wasn't cheap. So I bought a cheaper "commercial" model to learn with. It was supposed to beva stress relieving activity. But of course zero free time. They're still in the boxes ....

Buy something cheap to learn with and crash first.

Buy a plane that comes with a radio first. That should guarantee it is a trainer.
Use Google and radio controlled clubs for info.

I’ve been doing model airplanes since the Gullows kits & stick & tissue………RC models since the late 1960’s.
The current crop of foamy trainers are perfectly fine and are WAY easier to rebuild after a beginner crash (and you WILL crash them).
Just learn to use the proper glue and reenforcement techniques for the obligatory repairs.

Just like a “Gentleman’s Club” consider the $200 as the price of admission/cover charge…….things escalate from there.

My best build was a low wing with 2,200 square inches of wing surface. I flew it with a Super Tiger 4500 with a 22"x10" Zinger and ACP props.
It flew like low wing trainer but did "make" just over 100 mph at full throttle.
Weight 22 pounds.
The balsa for the 89" wing with 22 1/2" "cord" cost just over $200.00.
It now hangs from the ceiling in a liquor store in PG. Big Blue.
