HEINRICH SCHERPING ~ 9.3x72R N ~ HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE

HEINRICH SCHERPING ~ 9.3x72R N ~ HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE joins the family

I love little German Double rifles and this Scherping is a real Dandy in Minty condition. You can read about Heinrich here on the German Guns Forum. It features the History about Scherping and shows this double rifle and other examples of this Master Gun Maker.
https://www.germanhuntingguns....einrich-of-hannover/

The 9.3x72R cartridge is an old-World cartridge dating back to the 1890's. Ballistically it is about equal to the 35 Remington cartridge. Loaded with Factory 193g bullets, or 200g modern bullets, its very capable of taking Deer and Bear and Boar, and perhaps Elk, with a well placed shot.

Here are the specs:

Action is Top Lever Round Body w/ English Scroll Engraving w/ Rebounding Hammer Back-Action Locks w/ Greener Cross Bolt
Double Triggers w/ both Set-Triggers
Metal Condition is Very Good to Excellent w/ much Original Finish remaining
Highly Figured European Walnut Stock w/ a few Handling Marks w/ Cartridge Trap on Stock Bottom w/ Buffalo Horn Butt Plate
LOP is 14 inches to Front Trigger
Barrels are 27 inches w/ Matted Full Wide Rib
Sights are 2-Position Toggle Rear Site w/ Flip-up Tang Site and Platinum Bead Front Site w/ Ivory Bead Flip-up Moon Site
Bore Condition is Very Good to Excellent w/ 6-groove Henry Style Rifling
Weight is 6 lbs 11 ounces

The rifle is now cased in an All Leather Trunk Case. Field test to follow next week.

Great little rifle Buckstix.

Is the "N" in the chamber designation indicating this was the normalized 9.3x72r, so post 1912, or does it stand for 'nitro'?

WOW that's sure to be a hit where ever it goes mate - corker piece!
Absolutely beautiful engraving to top it all off. I was wondering about the 'N' too as it was originally a BP cartridge!

There are several 9.3x72R cartridges ...... they have slightly different chamber dimensions. ... "D" for Deutsche (German) ... "N" for Normalized (standardized) ...

So Normalized, not Nitro. Good for you. I have a wonderful double rifle in 9.3x72r, but before standardization, so I have to wrap cases with tape to size them down enough to chamber.

Dadgum your hide buckstix!!!!!!!! You got that rifle not 12 hours in front of me!!! I'd talked to the seller only a couple hours before you made your deal and was going to call the next morning.

Well done sir, that looks like a dandy!! Forgive me if I'm a little envious and please enjoy it!

Just scotch tape (cellophane?), wrapped in a single, non-overlapping layer. My rifle's chambers are tight halfway along the case (not the head or the base). This method allows me to size them down just enough to chamber. They're good after that.

I could just ream out the chambers to the normalized version, but I like to leave my collection as they arrived (unless something is broken.)

I do still use Imperial sizing wax when running them up in to the die.

I understand. But I think its important to make the gun usable for my own and future owner's use. Here is what I did for a cape gun that had a chamber in a German 11.6x82R caliber. I ran a 450 bpe reamer into the chamber so normal 450 bpe ammo could be used. This would be the same for the 11.2x72R "D" chamber. Only the middle of the chamber would be "Normalized" and you could still shoot "D" cartridges if you wanted.

buckstix,

That is an excellent rifle in a very nice cailber. That should be fun to hunt deer and also just having fun at the range.

I have enjoyed shooting the 9.3x72 as well as its brothers 9x72R and 8x72R. All accurate and with the right amount of power for deer.

Apparently the current Norma brass is based upon the E (English) and not D (German) version as the head is too large for several of the German rifles that I have had. I had to slightly reduce the head diameter on a lathe and the brass worked fine.

Look forward to your shooting report.

Did you buy a newly made case? Can I ask where, how much?

Same for the label, where did you acquire it?

I've two Jeffery's, a Westley Richards and a Cogswell and Harrison to case. The cases are probably out of my price range. Labels not!

Very nice rifle and case. It will be a pleasure for you to shoot. You have so many excellent choices.

There are lots of 9.3x72R rifles, combinations around usually at much better prices due to its marginal old BP power factor. It will be good to see what your reloading efforts result at.

I bought 2 "all leather" cases from Jeff's Outfitters as "close-outs", when he went out of business. They were listed as "defective" because the stock compartment was made too small for a standard size double rifle stock. He had 4 available of which I bought only 2. I wish I would have bought all 4. Retail was $650 each, but close-out price was $120 each. I cased this Scherping double rifle with one case, and my Rigby Needle-Gun Rook Rifle with the other case.

I always make case labels when I case a rifle. I search the internet for an example and make a copy. If no examples can be found, I create one, like I did for this rifle. I searched the internet and I found the Scherping family crest, and then I used the engraving that is on the gun's locks, to create a label. Then I print it on special parchment paper just like original labels.

Many times I purchase old cases and re-configure them to fit the rifle, and make a case label for the case.

Hi Buckstix, Nice job! I am as well smitten by Scherping guns & have quite a few of them & been researching him for the GGCA along with Dietrich, Raimey, Axel & others. Some of my guns & those conversations can be found by using the search feature searching Scherping & stretching the search to newer than 20 years. Thought you may want to take a look.

cheers
