Early Zeiss Jena prismatic scope
      #385744 - 12/07/24 06:47 PM

Just wanted to share one of my last finds....

An real early Carl Zeiss Jena prismatic riflescope "GZ" type, its the version with angled ocular, which was used on rifles. Serialnumber 395, made around 1905. Eyepiece is missing as usual.......

To think how far we've come now in relation to this fine specimen - it would have been state of the art 120 years ago!

this must be very rare scope today and I wonder what was for with this unusual mount.
I suspect you don't get it cheap?

As you see in the original Zeiss paper (first pic) of the time the version with angled ocular shut be used on Mauser rifles.
I am looking since years for an example of this early made types with hand engraved firm adress, and yes, it had its price....

Yes, that is what you see in these pics, 120 years technical evolution.

Technology never stops - makes you wonder what things will be like 100 years from now!
The young ones of that era will think how archaic we were!

If the current trend continues, the turrets will all be larger than the objective bell! And those are getting bigger by the day!
In fact, you probably won't even be able to find the objective bell amongst the cluster of oversized turrets!

The Zeiss will still work in 100 years, but the Burris?

Guided homing smart projectiles? Sights allowing the guided homing. Lasers? Caseless ammo. The case dissolving onfiring, gases down the barrel or out an ejection port. Fuel injection instead of powder? Fuel or gas ignition would allow very short bolt stroke, only the need to changed the projectile, andno large ejection port as no case.

Such are my science fiction mental writings.

But do t worry, we in Australia won't see any of this. Well still be using bolt action rifles. Those of class will still be using double and single shot rifles of 200 years of age.

All off topic. I've never seen such as scope as on this thread. Though I've seen modern prismatic style scopes I think. But without that long bar in front.
