received the French 8 bore pinfire rifle today. Nice and big. Weight is close to 11 pounds. Groove diameter of .873, chamber cast base in front of the rim is .937 same all the way to the end, no taper. Length is 3.65". I haven't slugged the bore yet. I have to find a hunk of lead large enough. Sights = 25 meter standing and 50, 100, and 150 folding

That bore looks pristine Casper! I'd hazard a guess to say its been restocked, the timber looks too good for its age, but you weren't wrong about the bore size, that will be one BIG ball to fit down that monstrous hole! Lovely piece, looking forward to see the range reports & how you get the cases done. Will be a cracker when she goes off!

What is an average twist rate for an 8 bore rifle? Mine seems really fast. 1 in 12" Bore slugged and the diameter is right at .840".

there are so few 8 bore rifles around its hard to say what the average twist was. you maybe start with a roundball? stock looks new but fine, better than an old broken stock anyway.

here are the pics from the 1900 SFM ammo catalog, suspect your rifle have a chamber for 85 mm long shells.

.873" is exactly 7 bore, & a good looking bore it is. What wonderful overall condition.

Interesting concept - a groove inside the cartridge case & a grooved bullet! Also an explosive shell......not sure if I'd be game to fire one of them!

Forsyth's little book printed in 1862 gives excellent diagrams on 2 different moulds for casting explosive, 2-piece bullets. These are applicable for any bore size, just adjust dimensions for the blocks needed to size required.

Yes here, possession of explosives regulated by license. Otherwise, possession is illegal.

Made some 8 bore pinfire cases for my rifle. Waiting on a custom mold then I can get it firing again.

Silly question Casper. Does the pin hit the primer in the case? So was this then was a step from percussion caps to a complete contained round?

I made a video showing how I convert brass shotgun cases to pinfire. It works on plastic as well. The pin hits the cap inside of the round stock holder. Pinfire was the in between step of percussion muzzle loading and centerfire cartridges as we know them today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RsonzmtAX0
