Bloody hell buckstix you have a big collection of dies, my collection is not even on the scales.

I do feel for you when the ones you want are on the bottom of the pile

I agree that personal preference is the driving force in most choosing their dies. I like some of the features and not others in various die sets.

I bow to your most certain superiority in possessing "stuff".
Of course, I do not own a SxS nor do I have a Brevex Mauser either.

Just did a quick census of the reloading dies in my employ: 66 sets with another currently inbound.

Only one set of Taylor dies though buckstix, so can't help out, sorry.

...and no .318 WR dies unfortunately. Anyone...?

(how's that for a slick thread hijack! )

....just read this thread, and curious about using opened up 338 WM dies...looking at the case dimensions, the 416T has a 2mm longer base to shoulder length than the 338WM....would this work or am I missing something ?

The base to the top of the shoulder should be identical, but the
416 "might"/"could" have a .004" shorter length base to shoulder for a crush fit on necked up .338's.
It should not be longer.
The trouble with case/chamber measurements, is the variation in wildcat chambers.

Still not sure about the extra 2mm length...

The 416 Taylor headspace is on the belt, not the shoulder. The first shot using a 338 WM case will fire-form the shoulder to the correct length to fit the chamber of the rifle. Its no big deal. I've fire-formed dozens of different belted wildcats like this that headspace on the belt.

I prefer to open the case larger, then size down for a crush fit, headspacing on the shoulder.
That way there is zero stretch at the web.
Different makes of brass and ctg. chamberings have different base to the top of the belt measurements.
I prefer no stretch so the brass lasts longer.
Opened up .338 dies would work perfectly.
Just adjust the dies as needed.

I've NEVER had case stretch at the web by fire-forming belted cases. Only the shoulder moves forward.

Perhaps that lack of stretching happens with belted cases, as rimmed cases will stretch at the web, if they are not supported by a shoulder, as will belted cases that are over sized in the shoulders when fl sizing. I am not saying the cases will separate upon fireforming, just that there is thinning at the web. I prefer to eliminate all stretching/thining.
I always neck up first, then down to form a head spacing shoulder before fireforming. Just something I do, automatically.
After fireforming, I only size the neck to the shoulder junction then check for feed and chambering.

So, I take it that the modded 338 dies are not for reloading but necking down cases for fireforming and then you neck size for reloading ?

Roger, once the 338 dies are bored out with a chucking reamer, they can be used for sizing and loading.
Due to the extra length of the. 426 body I would neck up the .338 case to .458 with an expander due, then use the bored out
.338 dies for necking down and keeping the shoulder from over-expanding.
