On the surface, for self defence the 38 Super would be the choice, now comes the "buts". A heavier pistol required to keep the recoil effect lower so you can get back on target quicker. There are far more pistols for the 9mm available so better chance to get an off the rack job that suites your needs. Can run +P+ in 9mm. If you do not handload then bullet selection is not as good in the 38Super.
In the real world I would go for the 9mm Parabellum every day.

IMHO as far as self defense goes, the Super is somewhat better. It's like comparing a .38SPL aginst a 357 Mag., power wise, but with the same repeat fire as a 9mm semi-auto. I had a .38 Super 1911 and rebarrelled to s 45 Auto. BEST yet. There was zero problem controlling the .38 Super in rapid fire just as thete was no problem controlling the 45 auto, even with 300gr. flat points. Perhaps that is a personal thing.

I'm not am expert by any means. Still learning, gaining experience.
I've a 1911 STI Trojan in .38 Super. Shooting +P .38 Super it makes a snappy bang, very noticeable by others, they comment on it. I don't notice any recoil issues. Maybe I'm slower shooting but I need practice, it's not the recoil IMO.
I have no idea if it's more effective in self defence. It's the "magnum", velocity debate. Is a higher velocity, maybe heavier bullet more effective? Or a larger calibre? My licence conditions are that it's a range target handgun.
The advantage I see for 9 mm is easier and cheaper to buy ammo.
I'd have one of each. And a ,45.

9mm is much cheaper to shoot if you buy ammo but not noticably cheaper if you cast your own bullets and handload.

John,
That is a great article. If the author had thrown the 10mm into the mix, that would have been an even better discussion.
I have had pistols in both 38 Super and 9mm cartridges. I like the 38 Super in a 1911 pistol but recently bought a Glock 34 in 9mm. The 38 Super is a more powerful cartridge than the 9mm but the 9mm is cheaper to shoot. Both the 38 Super and the 9mm (with similar, expanding bullets) are quite capable of stopping someone.
I think that handgun proficiency is the most important component of defending onself with a handgun. To become proficient, one needs to shoot often with whatever gun you will use.
BTW, my Glock 34 (9mm) is an ex=asy gun to practice with as the recoil is light and ammo is not that expensive. I reworked the trigger but is still isn't the same quality as a good 1911 trigger.
If you want a pistol to carry and also use for hunting, my recommendation wopuld be a 10mm. Recoil is greater but not severe. A 220 gr bullet at 1200 fps is certainly more effective than the 9mm or 38 Super.
