I just added another 416 caliber to the battery - 416 Van Horn

Well, I just bought the 416 Van Horn custom rifle built by Walter Abe. 416 is my favorite caliber.

It just so happens that I have a custom wildcat rifle chambered in 416 MRE from 1972 (Mid Range Express) ... that's the same caliber as the 416 Van Horn that Gill Van Horn invented in 1977. Its a 460 Weatherby Mag case shortened to 2-1/2" and necked down to .416 cal. Its basically a 416 Weatherby Mag "short".

as always comments are welcome ... and any info about Gil Van Horn or Walter Abe would be appreciated.

You certainly don't like the .416 calibre at all Buckstix!
This one definitely proves my theory wrong, what number are you up to now?
It really is in marvellous condition overall, I thought it was a Ruger initially from the shape of the stock. It will be a handy one to use, I reckon 400 gn pills should easy crack 2400fps without too much effort!

It is a good looking rifle. I did not know there were so many 416 chamberings.

Yes indeed! That's a nice bit of kit right there.
Won me with the sensible barrel taper, not often enough featured on American custom BGRs.
Well done mate!

Hello 93x64mm,

My next post shows another Brevex in 416 Rigby cal. That one is number 16 Brevex and makes ten 416 caliber rifles in my collection, including a 416 Hoffman, a 416 Taylor, and this 416 Van Horn.

As I said, I'm up to ten, .416 caliber rifles ... .416 is absolutely my favorite caliber .... here they are....

The A-Square is a .416 Hoffman ... The Lawson is a .416 Taylor, The Abe is a .416 Van Horn ... All the rest are in .416 Rigby caliber.

No argument from me. That is a great looking bolt gun.

I just received the rifle in hand and found it had these bases. Does anyone know what rings would fit these bases?

I would try SAKO Optilock For TIKKA. Or WARNE for TIKKA.

I just ordered a set of 16mm Warne Lever QD Rings for the 527 CZ. Those should work. They also have a recoil stud to keep them in place under heavy recoil.

Very nice rifle buckstix. Personally I would replace the bases. I'm not a fan of bases that hang out over the action area for no good reason and the raised metal of the forward edge of the recoil pin recess in the front base (second image) highlights some movement has occurred of a previously mounted scope in what ever rings were used. Much prefer genuine Weaver bases with rings having squared cross pins to match the square slots in Weaver bases, solidly locking both rings against recoil.

The Warne rings you have ordered for the 527CZ just have a rounded side pin as a recoil stop for which you will have to drill a hole in the base/s?

Hello eale27. There is a reason for the overhanging base. There is a small ledge that hangs over the action with a large set screw that keeps the base from moving forward under recoil. this takes the load off the 2 screws that hold the base. I fabricated a new stud and relocated the stud in the forward CZ ring to fit tightly into the slot in the base. All in all the 16mm CZ rings worked great on the 2.5x32 scope that I mounted. This allows for quick and easy "on-off" scope and iron site swapping, as needed. Field tests with the scope to follow.

Here is a picture of the 416 Rigby cartridge next to a 416 Van Horn cartridge. With modern powders the 416 Van Horn can equal original 416 Rigby performance.

And a picture of a target using the iron sites. This is a fun "puppy" load for practice.

And finally a picture of the mounted scope showing the overhang base. If you look close you can see the large set screw.

That light load would be a good woods load for anything on your side of the pond Buckstix!
Nice group indeed.

All good with your scope mounting, the main thing is achieving solid lock up of the rings on the bases which you seem to have mastered well. Hopefully you get as good results on target as you have with the irons.

Yes, I was fortunate to find that the 16mm CZ rings would work on the strange bases. The Warne Lever Rings allow easy on-off scope, to switch between scope and iron sites, with a positive return to zero when the scope is re-attached.
